Kasuku had been with us for 20 yrs. He was found in my daughter's back yard and no one claimed him, so we took him in. The vet figured he was 5 yrs old then. We also have a female (non breeding) quaker Skeeter, that was his companion. We aren't sure if we should get another companion for her or not. She is 20 yrs old. We are a retired couple in our late 60's. Is it fair to bring another bird in at this point?

Hi and welcome to the forum. I am very sorry for your loss Kasuka was lucky to have been found your family and to have lived a nice long life. I am sure Skeeter misses kasuka but there would be no guarantee that she would bond to a new arrival. You could look into rescuing an older one but I am a similar age and we adopted a new dog this year. I know they don’t live as long as Quakers but do what makes you happy.

So sorry for your loss. By rescuing Kasuku from outdoors and giving him a good home, you also gave him a good life. Like others here on the Forum, I know too well how hard it is to lose a much loved companion parrot.
I think your age is less of a concern than how Skeeter might feel about having another Quaker parrot brought into her life. No doubt she will miss Kasuku but that doesn't mean that she would want to welcome another parrot. If you feel that you want to have another parrot, and are prepared if Skeeter rejects or dislikes the new parrot, then you might consider adopting a Quaker. I think Caseysmom has a good idea about adopting one closer to Skeeter's age.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I might wait to see how Skeeter does as a lone bird.

So sorry for your loss. I lost my quaker, Packer almost a year ago now. He was 23 years old, just a few weeks shy of his 24th birthday. Just woke up one morning and he was dead at the bottom of the cage. I will not be getting another one as my wife hates birds.
