Hi everyone, we just bought a baby quaker yesterday.
I need to ask the pet store how old he is exactly but from what I can tell he is a couple weeks old, about 80g in weight, still being syringe fed 3 times a day.
When we bought him he had his brother/sister with him and so now they are seperated and I wanted to ask if generaly speaking it is better to have 2 quaker parrots living and growing up together rather than one? especially since they are sibilings.
I would appreciate if anyone can help me here as we feel he would enjoy his alone time when he has company, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully he’s nearly eight weeks old. If he was two weeks old he’d be prickly and bare with new feathers. Parrots are like people-it takes a long time for them to mature.
You will be feeding him so that should help the bonding. I hope you have gotten lots of lessons. Is he eating from spoon or syringe? What color is he?
My Quakers have all been cuddly birds who loved attention and pets.

Welcome to the Forum. Hand feeding a baby parrot is a delicate operation and quite a responsibility. I wish you well with it. Your Quaker is probably more than two weeks old. Few pet stores would be likely to sell one that young. Having a second parrot isn't a necessity and you should only consider that if you want another parrot, and not just to provide a companion for the parrot you already have. In time your QP will undoubtedly bond with you and the hand feeding often accelerates the bonding process. Your parrot will probably have some anxiety over being separated from his siblings but the time and attention he will get from you can make up for it. All the best to you and your new feathered friend.

Welcome to the forum, it’s too bad the breeder didn’t finish rearing your Quaker before you got him/her. As others have said , hopefully you got lots of instructions. Having one Quaker will be easier to raise and bond with. If you got two so young they would just want each other and would be more wild, plus you could get one of each sex and that wouldn’t work well with siblings. Looking forward to pictures and have fun getting to know each other!

Hello everyone, sorry for the late reply, it's been a hectic weekend. I'm trying to upload a picture of Rio but Photobucket is acting funny with upgrading my account so I can host pictures. Anyway, so went back to the pet store the next day to specifically ask about his age and they told me he's around 1.5~2 months old. Sorry for the wrong assumption  . He has full feathers and flys around when we let him out. I've decided against getting a second quaker because I've realised just having one is a big responsibility. He's been great so far, I feed him through a syringe 3 times a day, he usually eats around 3ml each time I feed him and he does have pellets which he eats from time to time. Please let me know if this 3 time schedule is enough. I feed him around 8am, 3pm and 8pm and each time he eats around 3ml from the syringe. I will try and get a picture of the formula as well for advice. It's been a few days now and we all love him. I thought my better half would hate him (she's not an animal person) but she seems to be ok so far. I have 3 kids (two are 10 years old and one is 5 years old) so I am trying to teach them what to do and what not to do. So far so good and he seems to be settling in well. I will try and post pictures once Photobucket fixes their issue, or if someone knows another way of uploading pictures I'll be grateful. |

Oh yes I forgot he is green, does it make a difference? I thought both green and blue were the same?

It sounds like things are going well with you and Rio and your family. I'm not experienced with syringe feeding and don't feel qualified to offer any advice on that.
Green is the standard color for Quaker parrots, but there are several color mutations. Blue is the most common color behind green. Their general characteristics are the same, though every parrot has his or her own distinct personality.
Unfortunately the Forum host doesn't allow photos to be directly uploaded from a computer, tablet or phone, so something like Photobucket or Imgur is needed. Don't give up-- Photobucket will probably cooperate with you eventually.

Rio seems to be happy and settling in. I’ve only hand fed baby budgies and I really can’t remember how often I did it. I assume since he’s older they put on on a schedule to wean him so he will switch to his pellets But for now if he isn’t eating much he still needs the syringe I’ve been getting emails from photo bucket for over a year saying unless I pay my account will be deleted I can’t log into it and I’ve not paid. I did some research and put the Imgur app on my phone. I just keep my account on there private but I upload pictures to it. Once they are uploaded you click on the picture and hold your finger on the screen and one of the choices is copy post link. If you click reply and not quick reply on the desktop version of this forum (That’s an option to click on the bottom of the main page after you log in ). Then when you are in reply at the top there are lots of features. Click the third box from the left in the bottom row and it’s for inserting an image. Delete the starting prompt there and paste in your link. Voila! It should be there here is a little baby cardinal I rescued from a pool a little while ago Hope those instructions made sense and we get to see Rio  |

I’m guessing he’s weaning pretty normally. I was placing him at about 7-8 weeks if he’s almost weaned but not quite, and 80 g. If he were hungry he would wail and Quake. Is he doing that?
The green and blue are very similar. Green is wild type. A Quaker by any color is wonderful. I would like a super special color someday, like gray or purple. But any Quaker is a fabulous bird. If you treat him well and wisely you will have a nice family member for 20 yrs plus.
Please ask any questions you have because we all love talking about Quakers.

I wanted to ask he keeps bobbing his head sometimes and I not sure if it means something. Can anyone help me figure it out. Is it normal? Sometimes he does it when he's in his cage whenever someone comes close. I don't know if he's just excited, hungry or there is something wrong. any help would be appreciated:

Bobbing the head means either”I’m excited!” Or if it’s accompanied by the whole body shaking and the baby begging cry, it means “I’m hungry, feed me.”
I didn’t explain that great but what I mean is that a regular head Bob is common with excited Quakers. “Quaking” is the baby behavior and that means “feed me” or sometimes “pick me up”.

Both of those vids start just with head bobbing but progress into full fledged quaking.
Is Rio a fallow green Quaker or something special? He looks more brightly colored than the normal green and grey.

I believe he is a green quaker but I did realise today that his back feathers have blue as well which I just noticed today. He was given to the pet store by a breeder and the other quaker that was with him was fully blue.
I thought it was either he's excited or hungry.

Green Quakers do normally have blue wing feathers. The cap of the wing is green but primary’s secondaries tertiaries are blue. I just though he looked kind of bright . Pretty bird!

I mean his head be looks like a pale yellow or yellowish cream color. I would have thought to see less yellow and more grey. But maybe it’s just the camera.
