Aaron, glad you had a 'good' time in Disney...but you know Cupcake will make you pay! Be prepared for some extreme squawking and nipping.

Yes these little creatures have a very big presence in the home We'll see how Cupcake does upon her return. Historically we have not been punished for trips... probably because she likes being at my parents' house so much. If anything I think we'll be punished for taking her home

Cupcake is home! She was incredibly well behaved tonight. Very sweet, really happy to see us... Was calm and collected on the ride home... Seemed excited to be home when we finally got her here. Aside from trying to chew on the air tube for the fish tanks a few times, she has been a perfect angel. I have to say that she made me proud tonight. Hopefully it is not some sort of carefully orchestrated Quaker ruse. Unfortunately her droppings still have a slight odor and some of them still don't look quite right to me... I am going to talk to the vet to get a very specific understanding of what her bloodwork covered so I can identify possible avenues that we have not investigated yet.

What a sweetie. I hope she's okay. Do you ever wonder if she wonders why you are always sniffing her droppings?

Easttex, investigating their bodily functions and being slaves to them is what we do best...LOL.

LOL... yes. I feel like I can see her wondering about that every time I do it.
Good news, however-- this morning, her droppings did not have a smell to them. I still want to understand why though.

I would, too. I reluctantly cancelled Peppy's appointment this week, based on the vet's recommendation. I almost want another crop swab to see if the infection really has cleared, but it's better not to put him through it unless necessary. Will be watching like a hawk. Well, not like a hawk, like a sentry.

Yeah, I definitely don't like putting Cupcake through the stress of vet visits if I can avoid it. She handles them pretty well, but still, it has to be pretty brutal for her.
I hope Peppy's infection is actually cleared up! That would be great.

So I emailed our vet asking for specific details on Cupcake's testing, and I got a really great response... what do you guys think:
Cupcake has been behaving quite hormonally lately (although amazingly she is still being a very good girl, despite the hormones)... so I am thinking their assessment about her sexual maturity is probably correct. We have been doing the apple cider vinegar in the water although getting her to drink it is a bit of a challenge.
All in all, quite encouraging!

Allie CAG is very hormonal, though I think we've passed the worst of it for this year. She always stores poop overnight, but the first droppings are especially large when she is hormonal. I haven't noticed that they are especially pungent, though. Anyone who has ever had chickens is probably familiar with cecal poop. Once a day, more or less, one poop will be very different from the others. The first time I saw it I knew my hen was deathly ill, but of course she wasn't. In chickens, some of the digested food sits and brews in the ceca. It's very messy and stinky when it emerges. I think most all birds have the ceca, but they're not all functional. I've never seen it with any of my parrots, but this calls for some research.

I don't know if I would call these especially pungent. There is a slight urine smell to them, that is really only detectable if you put your nose within an inch or two of it. And even then it is quite mild. My concern simply comes from the fact that there was no smell before. I don't get the impression that Cupcake is storing poop overnight. There are lots of droppings in her cage when I wake her up... they all look normally sized, and I change her paper before I put her to bed, so I know they have to be coming from during the night. There have been some times where it seemed like she was holding it at night, but it has been rare-- far from the norm.
That's interesting about the ceca... I guess there must be some degree of fermentation that occurs there. But yeah, I don't think this is the case with parrots.
