Hello, I was just wondering if you all had heard of Dr. Jason Craen? He is a guy who advocates for a whole food diet for parrots. Meaning, mostly whole natural foods (vegetables, fruits, flowers, tree nuts, and seeds. All as close to what is found in nature as possible.) He's not a fan of all seed diets, nor is he a fan of what I thought and read multiple times (60-70% quality pellets and the rest fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds.) As much raw natural food as possible and limiting processed foods makes sense to me. Even though it does take more work. What do you all think?

I've never heard of Dr. Craen but I have heard of people who tried to replicate the diet of parrots in the wild. It proved to be difficult to convert some parrots from their accustomed diets, but it does seem to make some sense. A whole foods diet would require more effort and expense than a traditional pellet based diet and it sometimes would be difficult to get a parrot to accept some of the unfamiliar foods. A lot of trial and error could be involved and there would likely be plenty of wasted food but it could work.

I’ve not heard of him but I do follow an Avian raw whole food nutrition group on Facebook and I find it very informative. I’ve tried some things but Casey still eats pellets as well

The first few times it was mostly wastes. Now she eats most of it. I agree trying to replicate exactly would be impossible. I eat mostly veggies anyway. I just share with Trump more these days....🙂🙂🙂🙂

As someone who's been feeding a biologically appropriate diet to canines and felines for 11 years, I was very interested in a natural diet for my new Sprout - the "fruity pebbles" they sent me home with immediately went against my sensibilities. I spent a couple hours recently talking with Dr. Jason Crean about a natural diet for my Sprout. He was extremely helpful in getting us started on natural foods and explained everything in easy to understand language. It was like talking with a good friend, never once made me feel inferior to his extensive knowledge of birds and their diets. He has a natural bird diet page on Facebook which is worth following.
Sprout gets a Biodiversity Blend tea in the morning with sprouted seeds and fresh veggies from my hydroponics. In the evening he's getting appropriate seeds as well as TOPS (a natural pellet) and sprouted microgreens - also from my hydroponics. For treats, he gets to forage dried flowers as well as fresh ones, also growing in my hydroponics. He's thriving on this natural diet.
