I noticed Trixie had a poopy stuck to her tail feathers. She tends to sit on her food dish (you never saw a bird eat as much as that tiny canary) and poop so it lands on the perch and some got stuck to her bottom. I waited several hours, figuring she'd do something about it herself, and she didn't. Poor girl, she has real difficulties reaching all her corners because of her trouble perching, and finally I decided I had to get it off for her. I toweled her with a washcloth since she's so little a towel would be way too much, and I wiped her bottom for her and cleaned it up, while she protested voraciously. She's far from tame, but we had come to a sort of understanding and now I'm afraid I've destroyed what little trust she had in me. She is not speaking to me. I was gentle but being wrapped in a washcloth and held on your back while somebody wipes at your butt with a wet rag has got to be unpleasant no matter how gentle. I talked to her the whole time and I've apologized repeatedly, but I am getting the Eye of Disdain and she was sitting on her perch trembling the last time I checked on her. I hope she forgives me.

Aww I bet she'll come around. Poor little Trixie. If only she understood that you were helping her.

At least canaries' memories don't seem to be as long as those of parrots...she'll probably have forgotten all about it in a week or two. Some of my outdoor canaries have been known to fly around with dried poop hanging off their rear ends for a couple of days, after which I grab them and remove it (after first waiting to see if they'll deal with it themselves).Don't feel too bad about it - it had to be done!

The indignity of it all. Must be tough to be a little slip of a thing, living in the world of giants.
