I think Ralph would enjoy a metal detector-- because of what he might find with it, and because of the interesting sounds it would make. Tonight, Ralph decided to try to build with the spoons, the way he does with his sticks. It was somewhat more challenging, dealing with slippery spoons and slippery surfaces (compared with the cage grate and bars, wooden ladder, etc. he uses in his regular building projects). He did succeed in building something (can't quite call it a Quaker nest ). Tomorrow, I'll post a picture of his project, which I left in place until I can photograph it (the batteries in my camera need to recharge overnight).

i am not at all surprised that Ralph decided to build something.

Now I'm really intrigued. Bonnie can't build with anything made of metal. She gets distracted by trying to attack it (a repetitive, darting, lunging peck - quite impressive). Maybe one day...

Have you ever tried giving Ralph those plastic tie wraps? I think you will be even more amazed what he can twist those into.

This is what Ralph built using the spoons, with the spice rack and a custard cup to help support the structure: Ralph's Gotcha Day is coming up on Saturday (5 years!), so here's a gift I chose for him :

You have one brilliant bird there Gary. Plus I can see he has you trained very well.

Now that is the start of an excellent house Ralph. And Happy gotcha day to you. I would imagine that if you had more spoons that the design would be something else. You can actually see how there is an opening below... Wonderful!

Plus I can see he has you trained very well. Absolutely-- though I'm sure Ralph thinks of my training as a work in progress. His next project was disassembling the structure in the picture and returning most of the spoons to the drawer. I guess he wants a clean slate to start his next project.

Happy Gotcha Day, Ralph! I would sure love to be able to get inside your head while you are assembling (and disassembling) those stupendous stainless structures.

Ralph thanks everyone for their good wishes. He had a good Gotcha Day, playing with his new spoons (and my old ones). I got him some new cable ties to weave with and a fresh supply of drinking straws to chew up, and he got some cheddar cheese and a taste of blueberry muffin (minus the berries, which he won't eat) for special treats today.
