I am Wally, a 1st time bird owner. I have had Beamer, a QP, for about 2 years now. I think he was a couple of years old when he was given to my wife and I by his previous owner due to her having many other pets & 2 toddlers, and not having adequate time to spend with the bird. He has been a joy to have....a pestilent joy, but a joy just the same. I had no bird experience but did internet research on what foods to stay away from. When I got him, his wings were clipped, but in my opinion, the ability to fly is what makes a flight able bird a bird. He had to learn to fly, with minor accidents (crashed into TV, landed behind dryer), but now he is an expert "pilot". I take him outside & he "plays" flies to neighbors (they all know him now). I think the bird has taught me more than I have taught him. He doesn't speak but is a good mimic of different sounds. He is like a family member in the home (even as far as having to fix him a plate during holiday dinners).

Welcome Wally... and it is great you have Beamer. I would be very careful about letting him fly outside as my friend did that with her bird as well.... until one day.... I guess it got lost and never returned. Just be careful of the predators as well... nothing more tasty for dinner than a nice bright birdie. Sorry to be gloom but I know there was another woman who had a quaker on this site.... and she was walking down the road with her quaker on her shoulder and a very large bird came up from behind .... swooped up the quaker and flew off with it. So sad. Please be careful.

Yeah, my grandkids go outside & go on "Hawk Patrol" before we venture out. I stay outside with him & most of time he stays perched on my shoulder. My wife laughs at me because I take the bird out for his walk.

Welcome Wally and Beamer! Quakers are definitely a joy, though a complicated one. I have to agree with Julianna about the hazards of free-flying outside. One good scare and Beamer could fly quite a ways and be unable to find his way back. And there are so many predators out there. Have you ever considered training him to wear a harness?

G'day, Wally and Beamer. You could consider the Aviator harness - see separate thread under Accessories (I think). I haven't heard of anyone using it successfully with Quakers yet, but Beamer could be the exception! Hope you enjoy the forum.
