Hello everybrody!!!
My name is Santiago I am mexican and live in Mexico City. A few wheels ago a saw yellow head parrot in a tradicional mexican marquet. This kind of parrot where very common when I was a child, these parrots where easy to find and were not expensive. Unfortunatelly I found out that these parrots are an endangered species. Nevertheless I decide to find a parrot to be my pet. Two weeks ago a saw I Quaker Parrot in a pet store. At that time I didn't know anythinh about these parrot. But he/she looks very similar then the green parrot with yellow front that I remember from my chilhood. So, I bought this parrot that was solo to me as an Uruguayan parrot and I named Alfie.
I started to do some research about my Uruguayan parrot and it turns out that is Also known as argentine parrot and peruan parrot. Finally I found that them are known as monk parrots or Quaker Parrot.
As I read more I discovered that without knowing I found an amazing parrot, as you already know.
I want to do the right procedure to tame Alfie. Alfie born in USA and was hand feeded. I did my math and I think Alfie is 12-14 months old. I have several questions about Alfies's behaviour, but I will make these questions in the corresponding secction of this great forum.
Santiago.

Welcome Santiago and Alfie! That's interesting how the South American countries refer to the Quaker. I did see a lot of them in the wild on a visit to Uruguay and I can see why they think of them as their own. And they are great little birds, as you are discovering.

Hi Aarón, and thank you for your comments.
I am very happy with Alfie, but Also a little bit worried Because I cant understand him, that is is behaviour is confusing becuase he acts like he were afraid of me, but when a sit two or three feets away from his cage, hi move clase to me with his feather inflated. However, if, for instace, I stand up from My charisma, he moves away.
I think that this is part of the process let him develop confidence in me.
Thank you again.

I would recommend spending lots of time just sitting near his cage talking calmly to Alfie. That will help him to get comfortable. It takes a while for birds to adjust to new homes and owners. Patience is key in these situations. I am sure he will come around in time.

Welcome, Santiago and Alfie! Happy to have you here on the Forum. Another name for the Quaker parrot that not many people know about is Montevideo parrot. So many different names for one little parrot. Aaron gave you good advice. Sit near Alfie's cage and talk softly to him. Read to him or sing to him too, if you want. That helps him get used to you and the sound of your voice. It probably won't be long before you and Alfie are the best of friends.

Hello again everybody!!!
I am writting you to let you know my advances and read your opinions. Until now Alfi has about 6 week living with my fiancee and me. Few days ago I read that birds from pet stores usually have behaviour problems, mainly because the time speed in the store, that maybe several months, is very stressful. I wont go deeper in this topic because surely many of you are very aware of the actual situation of parrots from petstores.
As expected, Alfi turn out to be a very afraid parrot, with a behaviour voy different from that normally exhibited by Quaker parrots, according to what I read and what I been whatching in youtube.
To avoid make things worst I have been very careful, or at least it is what I think. To start with, Alfi only eats sunflower seeds and other small seeds that came in the food bag that I bought when Alfi came home. So, the treats thing doesnt works because if I only give sunflower seeds to Alfi to try to get him clase to me, he would be dead of starvation right now. Then, I decided to give Alfi sunflower seeds as its regular food. When I approach to his cage, I try to do it slow and avoid to make abrupt movements when I am clase to the cage. When I need to put me hand inside of Alfi s cage (only when it is absolutely needed) he stills get mad, however, day by day he has been reduced his response. I started to think that he is not afraid of me because when I wake up around 5:30 am, I go to the kitchen for my cofee and I pass very clase to Alfi and he doesnt move, maybe because he is sleepy, I dont know.
Recently, when we seat to dinner, Alfi start to eat and drink and show him self, and moves close to us, that is to the end of the perch that is most close. He Also opens and close his beak fast and makes a funny low sound. All that signs make think that he is string to trust me. So, I dont what to speed up the process to avoid losing my advance. Before we leave Homero go to work, we put Alfi s cage in the window, with food, fresh water I a cover to give him shade. When we return, and before to return Alfi s cage to its base, I move the base closer to the chair I use. In fact, right now he is seatead in his perch inside the cage in distance no greater the two feets.
Please give me you opinions and advices.
Thank you very much, Santiago

Hi again, Santiago and Alfie, I think you are both doing very well. You might want to feed Alfie more variety in seeds - and, eventually, get him onto pellets...although I don't know what your supplies are like where you live. Do you give him fruit and/or vegetables too? It sounds like you are making good progress with Alfie and that he is starting to trust you. My quaker makes a low sound - like a cat purring - when she's happy. You are being very wise not to force Alfie near your hand unless necessary. After all, it's early in your relationship!
