Normally Benjy zooms at me every time I appear and a little while ago, he didn't. He just sat where he was. After a while, he came toward me and crash landed in my lap, then went to Freddie's cage and clearly, his flying was less than stellar. So I scraped Clyde off with difficulty and examined him. He's moving it, and he preened it, so it's not broken, but it's not behaving right and he's having difficulty navigating. I evicted Maggie from his cage (she's decided it's her fort, for some reason) and put him in and fixed food and water so they're handy to his little shelf and he didn't object. Benjy ALWAYS objects to being put in his cage. He's sitting in it (on a perch, not his shelf) and he's not even griping. So he must need the quiet and rest. Of course it's not only a weekend, but a holiday weekend and apparently it's up to me to take care of him. Any ideas other than rest? He CAN fly, he just can't get a lot of lift and hasn't the control he normally has. And when he was on my hand, he was chattering and chirping as always, not acting any different.

Is he holding it lower than the other one? If he is, but it isn't really low, he might have sprained it. I don't think there is too much you can do on your own, other than restrict his movement. Wrapping can help, if it's done fairly soon after the injury, but if you don't really know what you're doing it can do more harm than good. I've had some training in it, but still wouldn't attempt it without supervision.
These things always happen on a weekend or holiday, don't they?

They certainly seem to. And two days ago, my lizard hurt his toe somehow and was bleeding all over the place. Looked like he caught his toenail on something, but I can't imagine what. His tank is lined with paper towel, not sand, and his hideys don't have any sharp edges. He was less than cooperative about letting me examine him, and he's okay now. When I checked on Benjy again at bedtime, he was sitting on top of his three-way mirror, his usual sleeping spot, so he must have gotten over there from his shelf somehow. He wasn't really holding his wing any different, and in fact it took me a while to figure out which wing was hurt. He was lifting and moving it the way you would if your shoulder was sore and you were trying to work out the kinks. It may only be a pulled muscle. I'll let him out tomorrow and watch how he manages and if he's still having trouble navigating, I might keep him in his cage tomorrow.

I wonder if he bashed it and it is a bit bruised. I would watch it for the next couple of days to see how it goes. When I picked Shah up from the vet after I was in hospital, he was holding his foot up. Of course I went into panic cos I was too unwell to take him to the vet. My friend told me to wait a couple of days to see if it would improve. It was funny watching him limping around but each day it got a little better. I think he must have bashed it on something. Good luck with Benjy - he is such a great little guy and just so full of personality.

I had to help him get back on his shelf this morning and he's quite subdued, so I left him in his cage until I can be in the room to be his taxi after church. My guess is Jade strikes again. She grabbed Johnny by his wing once but he's a lot bigger and he got away. If she grabbed Benjy's wing, she could have yanked it pretty hard without his being able to get away.

I don't know much about wing injuries-- but I hope Benjy's wing feels better soon! Good luck!

Poor Benjy!
If you're able to, and if it doesn't upset him too much, you could put him in a smaller cage and cover three sides and put a light on him. The heat and light really seem to help.
Good luck, I hope he heals fast!

His cage is the smallest already. Normally, he only sleeps in it, so the size isn't as important as it would be if he had to stay in it a lot. Which is why it's so odd that Maggie has comandeered it. She's the biggest bird.

Benjy was being a very good boy about not complaining so I opened his cage to see how he was and he zipped across the room with no apparent problems. He's always been a fast healer. He's had to be. He's too dumb to stay out of mischief.

That's is a great relief. He needs to learn to stay out of Jade's way but I fear that will never happen.

You are correct. After all the injuries she has given him, guess where he went as soon as I opened his door? Yup.

More like a bratty little brother who gets on her last nerve. LOL Benjy also would very much like to sleep in Clyde's cage with Clyde. Most nights if I've been out of the room close to bedtime, I go in to tuck them in and there's Benjy in Clyde's cage, all puffy and settled in for the night. He objects greatly when I dig him out and make him go to bed in his own cage. Although I don't think Clyde would mind, if he did have a mood swing and decide Benjy was bothering him, it would NOT be good to have them locked in together. Even Freddie and Johnny, the Bobbsey Twins, get into scuffles if they're shut in together. I've only had to do that a couple of times, like when we moved and I couldn't get Jade out of Freddie's cage when it was time to go, so I shut the door and brought her over here in it. That meant that Johnny and Freddie had to ride here in Johnny's cage together. It's a five minute ride and they argued every blessed jump of the way. Yet they spend all day every day doing everything together and usually they're in one cage together playing, but with the door open.

That's like Spike and Pippin. Pippin spends most of his day singing to Spike. Spike ignores it. They seem to be okay together until bed time and then all the hissing and arguing starts. It happens every night without fail.

It's mean, but I LOVE Taz's "'tiel hiss". He's so little, but so fierce. LOL. Adorable!!
