Since Sherlock went to his final reward, and I had to buy bird food, I figured I'd get another mystery snail today, but I have a migraine (going away, thank God) and I decided to get cheap Walmart food to tide them over until I feel better, since I had to go to Walmart anyway. Well, they have bettas in cups and I had to walk right past them to get the bird food and I brought one home with me. He's white and red with a little purple and he has freckles on his nose so I'm calling him Freckles. He's in a 2.5 gallon tank, which is kind of small but it's what I had empty, and it's better than the tiny cup he was in. He's got a heater and a pump and a pineapple hidey and two of the many spare plastic plants I have lying around so he's pretty much set. I put cool water in and turned on his heater so it will heat up gradually and he can adjust slowly to having warm water.

Those poor bettas are tough to resist, and they seem to be strategically placed. Welcome to Freckles-- hope he has a good long life with you. Hope your headache is gone by now too.

No hope at all. LOL So far, so good. I was handling him very gently and the cashier was surprised and told me the "salesmen" (I suppose she meant the ones who deliver them) "just toss them around." Yeah, I'll bet they do. That's no reason for ME to. He seems a little bewildered, but he has explored every corner of his tank and he finally ate something when I dropped food on his head so he couldn't miss seeing it. And he's not a bit scared of me. I had to reach in and readjust things a couple of times and he didn't freak out.

and they seem to be strategically placed. ...for Siobhan, at any rate. G'day Freckles and welcome! It sounds as though he's settled in very well. Poor Sherlock, I bet you will miss him, though.

Very cute name for a fish, especially a "warrior" fish. Siobhan, I don't know if you frequent Tractor Supply or feed stores where you live, but it's getting to be the time of year you should probably stay out of them. The chicks and ducklings are just about irresistible, and they are always placed strategically.

I would dearly love to have chickens and ducks but we don't have a good place for them to live. We'd have to fix up the tumbledown shed in the back yard that used to be my playhouse and once even served as a pony's stall. Maybe I could just get one chicken and keep it in the house ...

As I say to my autistic students when they muck up..."oh, dear!"

A chicken wouldn't be much messier than a pigeon, though how a chicken would get along with the parrots and the pigeon in question is the real issue. LOL Based on the chickens we had when I was a kid, I would guess that the chicken would assume control and bully everyone else. Penny, the Head Hen, was definitely in charge in the back yard. The cats, the dogs and all the other chickens deferred to her.
