Hi all!
Rosie came to live with me last Thursday and she is my first Quaker parrot. She has been on an all-seed diet, so I have introduced greens and a bit of fruit into her diet. I have read that they should ideally be on pellets, and to introduce these gradually into the diet. Like all critter food, I presume there's a scale of quality when it comes to pellets for parrots, so do any of you know what NutriBird G14 are like in terms of quality?
Thank you,
Pavlor

I've never given my birds that brand, but as has been noted in other threads, the best pellet is the one your bird will eat. Just about any of them are going to be better than a seed diet. I give mine a mix, mainly Harrison's and Roudybush.

I'm not familiar with that brand of pellets. ZuPreem Fruit Blend pellets are popular among QPs. Ralph likes Pretty Bird Daily Select and Higgins InTune pellets too (all fruit flavored). He'll eat plain Roudybush pellets if they're mixed in with the ones he prefers, but absolutely refuses to eat Harrison's. You might want to try soaking some pellets in spring water or unsweetened fruit juice to soften them. That's helped many parrots learn to like eating pellets and may work for Rosie too. Ralph still gets some soaked pellets every day, though he eats the dry ones readily enough. He thinks the softened pellets are a special treat.

Kritter has been eating a seed diet so I would like to switch him to pellets. How should I do it, mix pellets with seeds or just switch all at once? Have ordered some samples, got some from Hagen, he doesn't seem to like those. Will try softening them with filtered water.

Mixing them is a good start... also softening them with apple juice might be enjoyed as well. If they are soaked then keep them separate from the seeds.

Have tried mixing them dry, he eats the seeds and ignores the pellets. One day I knew I would be back early, so left him mostly pellets with a few seeds, he ate the seeds and pulled feeder out of its holder and threw on bottom of cage. Will try the apple juice.

When we transitioned Cupcake to pellets we used Harrison's High Potency Mash (which is a powder) to coat her seeds for a while, to get her used to the taste of the pellets. Then we mixed the seeds and the pellets for a while, and then eliminated the seeds entirely. I think as far as seed to pellet conversions go, she was really easy, so I'm not sure how useful this technique is.

I might try that technique, aaron. I put pellets on top of the seeds this morning, he threw out the pellets until he got down to seeds. I have some pellets from Harrison's, may try grinding them to a powder to coat his seeds. Thanks. Kritter is a sun flower seed junkie. I know I need to cut back on those because of fatty liver disease, but sometimes that is all he will eat.

Yeah, in my opinion, sunflower seeds have a drug-like effect on our bird... it can be hard to break them of the habit! Just keep working at it, and I'm sure you'll have a breakthrough eventually.

Will cut back on the sunflower seeds gradually.
