Hi everyone, I've used this website over the years for information but never joined the forums until now. I thought it would be fun to see how similar (or not) my Beeker is to other Quakers. He (I call him he but not really sure) is almost 22 years old and we've had him since he was 5 weeks old. We got him from a pet store that breeds Quakers and other birds, and we let him choose us. He came right out of the cage full of babies to me, then sat on my shoulder while we walked around the store. How could we not take him home that same day?! Anyway, he is quite a little character and can be so much fun. Then there are those "other times"... especially in the Spring. LOL So one question I have about other Quakers is, do they like fireplaces as much as Beeker? We've been in the same house his entire life and had the fireplace the whole time, but for some reason this Winter he really seems to be enjoying the heat from the fire. Here is a picture, he sits on my knee while I work on my laptop and he just snoozes away. He has even figured out that if he "hunkers down", he won't fall over. LOL Is this unusual?

They are great photos! I have a quaker of the same age, but I haven't had him very long, and we don't use our fireplace. Since this is new behavior, I wonder if Beeker might have some arthritis setting in. That could make him more of a heat-seeker.

Welcome to the Forum! Beeker is a good-looking Quaker. No experience here with a parrot and a fireplace-- sorry I can't help.

Well, he certainly looks comfortable. Welcome to you and Beeker. You are definitely a veteran quaker parront. We have a fireplace we use every day in winter. Bonnie likes to be quite close to it (once or twice, TOO close...she landed on it momentarily, seemingly without injury). I wonder if it's the Mexican genes coming through (aren't quakers originally from Mexico? Could be wrong), but as he hasn't behaved this way prior, I suspect Easttex may be right about arthritis. Hope you enjoy being a Forum member!
P.S. Beeker is gorgeous!

Thanks for the welcomes and nice words for Beeker! I'm enjoying reading through the forums and getting to know everyone a little bit. Beeker has been slowing down as he gets older, and his balance doesn't seem like it's as good as it was when he was younger, so maybe he does have a touch of arthritis. He has a large cage in his own little room (used to be our laundry room), so he is not locked in unless we have a large gathering (so he doesn't get stepped on). He wanders around all day from the top playpen to the floor (he has a basket that he loves, and is what he spends time on when we have him outside his room). Though he doesn't do it as often as he used to, he will sometimes walk down the hallway to the kitchen, which is where I spend most of my time between work and cooking. He prefers to walk rather than fly, I think flying scares him!

He's certainly a cutie! I am really intrigued at how young he looks - Bonnie is only 1, but Beeker has the same wide-eyed baby look at 22. Amazing!

Welcome to you and Beeker!
Those are incredibly cute photos. He seems like a really happy bird! I have no experience with a quaker and a fireplace to speak of unfortunately. But I'm not surprised he finds it comforting. Birds like to be around warm showers, so why not a warm fireplace?

Hi aaron and Beeker. Oscar (my qp) hates my fireplace. If I walk with him on my shoulder and go by it... he will hide behind my neck. I am glad your little one likes your fireplace.
