Anyone know what this sound means? I’m guessing it’s probably a sign that he’s grumpy, either from me, being hungry, thirsty, or sleepy or just moody tunes. He will sometimes start making the noise out of the blue just sitting on his perch, but it’s usually around the late afternoon. The other time will be after eating breakfast and he’s a little sleepy, though he doesn’t go back to sleep. He doesn’t move around a lot, and I’m even having trouble getting him to go to his water cup on his own, so I’m still giving him water by holding it close to him. But when he makes this sound, he’ll pace around on the perch or wherever he’s sitting. It’s the most he’ll move all day. He’s only 3 months old, but this is the only sound he makes besides the beak grinding. It’s not very often he makes this croaking sound, it’s maybe just a couple times a day for a minute or so, but I’m just trying to make sure I’m reading him correctly. Other than this, he’s nearly completely quiet and is extremely mild and tame. He doesn’t really enjoy me holding him (which is understandable, we’re still adjusting) but he never bites hard or attacks or shrieks or hisses at me or anything. He’s pretty indifferent to everything but eating seeds lol.
(I’ll see if I can upload and attach a youtube video of his sound once I download it to my pc.)
It’s something between a wooden floorboard creaking and a hungry stomach rumbling. But it’s not very loud at all. I’m just wondering if this is his quaker cursing or something else? TIA~

Chouchou doesn't sound-- or act-- grumpy. He's definitely not Quaker cursing. That sounds more like a human grumbling, as if muttering curse words quietly. It's not exactly like any sounds my QP Ralph ever makes, but it seems somewhat more to me like the purr of a contented Quaker than anything else.

Yesterday, he actually started his first molt (he’s only 3 months old so holy cow didn’t expect that) and he was definitely enjoying all of the neck rubs and my attempts to help the pin feather sheathing fall off. I’d ask him if this was the right spot, or if he was enjoying it, and he’s just reply with that same little sound from before. I think at that point is was clear to me that it was a good noise. But when I would move my fingers a little too far left or right or aomething, he would make a similar, but obviously less enthusiastic sound, like a duck quack/caw. I got the impression that these two sounds are basically yes/good and /no/bad in his language. And he’s just recently started making this little purring noise every half minute or so, just sitting on his perch or on my chest while I’m reading a book. He doesn’t yet make any other sounds expect for when beak grinding, so I’m relieved that I have some audial indicators to go by!

The purr is definitely a sign of a happy, contented Quaker. When Ralph is displeased with something, but not annoyed enough to Quaker curse, he'll say something that sounds like aaaccckkk! The more annoyed he is, the more drawn out the sound will be. So Chouchou's caw or quack sound likely is his way of telling you that you're doing something wrong.
