Hi, my name is Katie! I’m 21 and currently live in Louisiana currently, though I’m moving to Seoul, S. Korea within the next few months with my quaker parrot and my 13 y.o doggie within the next few months. I grew up here in Louisiana, though I did live in South Korea for a year or so right after finishing highschool. I just graduated from colllege and decided on Monday that it was the day for me to finally fufill one of my childhood dreams— to have a parrot!
My grandmother had a green cheeked conure named Pablo, who passed away when I was around 10 or so of old age (though his age wasn’t known). He was my absolute favorite thing in the whole world besides my dog, and my grandmother always told me that Pablo was closer to me than he was to her, even after spending most of his life with her. A couple of years afterwards, she adopted a rescue cockatiel and renamed him Thomas. I really love Thomas a lot too, though I have to say, Pablo was definitely my favorite bird.
My parents let us have many kinds of pets over the years: 4 red-eared slider turtles, numerous fish, 5 hermit crabs, a few mice, and we even had a pet crawfish at one point (because Louisiana). However, they didn’t like the idea of having a bird, which in hindsight, I completely understand why. Knowing how to, and being able to Care for a bird is definitely beyond any of my other pets’ needs, including even my dog. But I feel I’m finally ready to pour in all of my energy into caring for a bird at last.
My quaker’s name is Chouchou. It’s a French nickname, meaning something inbetween the lines of teacher’s pet and honey bunny. He’s about 3 months old now, so he doesn’t talk or make much noise at all, and he’s super calm and mild all around. I had originally planned on getting a green cheeked conure like my grandmother’s, but I absolutely fell in love with him when he first perched on my finger.
I adopted him from a lovely little crazy bird lady in Denham Springs. She had introduced me to a few of her conures, but after meeting and greeting a bunch of them, she recommended meeting my little quaker. She runs a family bird shop with the help of her son called BayouaBird. They have a couple hundred parrots/birds, of every (legal) kind you can imagine. I don’t know how she does it, but she does. She makes all of the (chew) toys, feed and fruit mixes, and even tames (hand-raises?) some of the really young ones.
Anyways, I’m so happy to see that there is a forum dedicated to these awesome birdies, and I’m excited to learn a lot more about them! I’ve bought a couple of books on quakers, but I feel that I’ll probably have a bunch of questions about Chouchou regardless. I totally want to adopt other birds in the future, especially rescue birds once I become much more experienced. But I’m completely focused on Chouchou for at least the next couple of years. So yup! I’d love to show everyone a photo of him, but I don’t think I can? I’m still figuring out this forum. (Edit: Ah, there’s a desktop version!)
Anyways, thanks for reading and nice to meet likeminds!
