Mostly my birds have to get by without junk food, though they all love it. I sometimes share a little something with them in small quantities. We had fast food for dinner, and I had leftover fries, so I took a few to the birds. They used to all love fries and hadn't had any for a long, long time. Jade was so excited she almost fell off her perch, so I gave her one and then offered one to Clyde, and it scared him so much he flew to the top of a boing and cussed at me. The tiels tasted it (after I took a bite as the Royal Taster to prove it wasn't a parrot-eating monster) but they just shrugged. Benjy and Maggie wouldn't even taste. Clyde came back and finally took half of one, tasted it and threw it on the floor. Jade is the only one who ate hers. I suppose that's a good thing, though I thought I was giving them a huge treat.

You should ask Sharyn to send Mr P over to show them how it's done, after all, gluttony is an art.

OH and Mr P LOVES french fries, even the kind that are frozen and you bake in the oven. I don't know how he would react if he had a fast food one, he would probably snort from excitement while he was eating it!
Then again, Mr P loves mashed potatoes too.

So how much does the little epicurean weigh, Sharyn? My bruiser came in at 135g yesterday, just about one week after the 130g at the vet's. Could be a difference in the scales, but I'm obviously going to have to watch him!

Wow, I'm surprised those french fries got such a lukewarm reception! I haven't fed one to Cupcake in a long time, but she used to go crazy for french fries.

I was surprised, too. They used to devour them when they got them more regularly. They love mashed potatoes, too, and those are probably better for them, all things considered. I don't give them potato chips anymore, but I used to let them have a bite of those now and again, too. I made a cake a week or so ago and Freddie went nuts over it while Jade ate a couple of bites and had had enough and nobody else even tried it, either.

Cupcake loves anything salty, and of course salt is terrible for birds... but yeah, when I used to feed her bits of potato chip she was crazy for them.
Although there is nothing she is as crazy for as she is for cheese, which I also do not let her have any more. But man, she will devise some seriously devious plans to try to steal cheese from our plates when she notices it there.

Oscar likes French fries but only the insides... little spoiled brat. I squeeze the potato out and make sure it isn't too hot... then he will eat it. He prefers his potatoes baked. If I want Oscar to try eating something... I eat it in front of him first.... then he will try it.

That's great that Oscar doesn't want to eat the fried and salty outside I feel like Cupcake goes for whatever is worst for her, all the time. And she doesn't care what I like. It only matters what she likes. Although she definitely wants to feel like I am offering her anything I am eating, even if she doesn't want it.

Could be a difference in the scales, but I'm obviously going to have to watch him! Mr P goes back and forth between 105 and 108 grams. He was 102 grams when I first brought him home but that was on the vet's scale. He will have his annual physical in a few weeks and I will get him weighed again, but we are switching vets so that will be on a different scale too. For as much as Mr P eats, he also gets a ton of exercise as he climbs up and down the ladder from his playstand to the floor about 25 times a day. He also has a humongous cage so the rare times that he is stuck in his cage, he has plenty of room. I have his cage set up so his toys are nearer the bottom and his food is nearer the top so he is forced to climb up and down the sides of his cage to go from food to toys, etc. 135g is a pretty big quaker

Maybe there is something about living with me that makes my birds monsters when it comes to food! Pele (my foster white capped pionus) did not feel as though dinner was being served in a timely manner this evening and waddled into the kitchen to see why the service was so slow!

Oh dear, Sharyn, you're slipping. Poor Pele, forced to check out the kitchen & fridge on his own. Easttex, I think the term 'epicurean' came from the Roman name Epicureus (not sure of spelling), didn't it? Not a bad name for a quaker.

I remember when Pele wouldn't even leave the cage. He is doing really well

Although there is nothing she is as crazy for as she is for cheese, which I also do not let her have any more. Hard cheeses, like aged cheddar, have little to no lactose, so they're not much of a problem if offered occasionally, in small quantities. Extra-sharp cheddar is one of Ralph's favorite occasional treats. Ralph will take a few little bites of a french fry, but in his considered opinion, baked potatoes are the best.

No doubt about it, Ralph has class. Bonnie likes one little piece of shredded tasty cheese (the type you get pre-shredded for putting on homemade pizzas)
