Izzie will be attending an open day at a high school about an hour's drive from where she is now. She will be the ambassador for Horse Rescue. This time last year, she couldn't be handled (I would sit in her paddock and bribe her over with carrots - I have never seen a pony's neck stretch so far) and while she is still very spirited and I still occasionally see flying hooves because she doesnt want to be caught, she has come such a long way. Of course, I will be going with her to supervise that she is okay. I am just so proud of my little girl.

I have a dream of adopting a horse one of these days. Good to know I can come here for some good advice. Kind of one-stop-shopping.

Easttex, if you're serious about adopting a horse, let me know when you're ready. I'm sure I can find some reputable connections in Texas.

Thanks, Dani, I will do that. Right now I have the room, but no barn and shaky fencing. A lot of the property is wooded, and we have gas pipelines running across it, so I would definitely want to do some cross fencing, also. I have a large pole structure that could probably be the basis for a barn, but I'm not sure about it. I really need to educate myself more, too.

I'll start looking now, so you'll be ready. Do you want to rescue one? You can always buy at an auction, or if you don't feel comfortable with that, there are people who buy at auction and then do any necessary training or rehabilitation. That's a "safer" way to rescue.

I agree with Dani. Get a horse that has been assessed and had some training.

Easttex, if you're interested in seeing how auctions work, there is a BIG one in Hermiston, Oregon next weekend. I was hoping to be there working, but it's not going to happen. Instead I'll be online practically 24/7, gathering and posting pictures and evaluations.
You can follow on Facebook. Look up Hermiston Outreach.

It's not uncommon for 100 horses to ship straight to slaughter from this auction.

Thanks, Dani. I will try to take a look at the auction, though I would do better to go through someone who has worked with them first. I'm just too ignorant. I probably couldn't watch too much of the auction, if it's clear that some of them will be going off to slaughter if they don't sell. I grew up on Walt Disney - I don't like facing hard realities.

I understand. No worries. In October, we brought so much attention to this auction by posting pictures and evaluations online, and having people "on the ground" so to speak, who placed bids for people, that more than 40 horses who would have shipped were bought by private homes and rescues. It was an amazing victory for the horses.
