Now he's floating around half in and half out of his shell. I touched him and he recoiled, so he's not dead, but floating is not good. I suspect he's dying.

You're probably right, but I will hope for a miracle recovery. You write so engagingly about your animals that you've gotten me emotionally invested in them.

I had to leave for work and I have a long day today so I won't be able to check on him again until about 8 p.m. Maybe he'll come out of it.

I hope he is just having an off day and will be as good as new by the time you get home. Fingers and toes are crossed for Sherlock's recovery.

He was still floating when I came home, but he reacted when I touched him and I put him back in and then he oozed over and stuck himself to the tank wall. He's not doing well, but he's hanging on.

He was floating again this morning, but still alive. I don't know if "pale" is the right word to describe his skin color, considering he's normally a dark gray, but his color isn't right.

Have you tried adding any calcium for him? If he's not able to anything but float, a calcium block may not be of much use for him, but if he does recover a bit it might help with the shell repair.

I've crumbled bits of cuttle bone into their water fairly regularly since I've had that tank.

He's still floating round and round, and he has taken one of the ramshorns hostage -- they attach themselves to anything and one was stuck to him and he wrapped himself around it. I tried to dislodge the ramshorn this morning but Sherlock wouldn't let go and he recoiled again when I touched him, so he's still in there, but he does not look good. However, I'm still haunted by the conviction that I gave up too soon on a previous mystery snail who had been pulled into his shell for a few days on the bottom of the tank and I thought he was dead and took him out and wrapped him up and disposed of the body. A couple of days later, another snail did the same thing and I was busy and didn't get to that one immediately and that one came out of it and was perfectly fine. Ever since, I have worried that the first one would have come out of it, too, but died a possibly horrible death wrapped in a paper towel in the trash can. All the aquarium sites say that a dead snail absolutely reeks and that is the one and only sure way to tell if it's dead, so until I am sure, I'm leaving him in that tank.

Still pulling for him here! I think you'd be surprised to learn how often I've thought of him the last couple of days.

Like Easttex, I am thinking about Sherlock frequently. I really hope he pulls through - he seems to be hanging on.
