I'm thinking maybe I've finally hit on the right mix in the community tank. After a few days of arguing and picking on each other, they've settled down pretty nicely and seem to be getting along. There's still the occasional disagreement, but nothing serious, and all five seem to be healthy and happy. I cleaned last weekend and anticipate having to change filters a lot more often, but for the most part, I think we're good. Opie is over his most recent spell of hiding in a corner and not swimming around, and Sherlock is still hiding most of the time. I may get Sherlock a mystery snail companion. The ramshorns just annoy him and it might perk him up and when you have that many snails (and only one fish) in a tank, what's one more?

That's great! Our community tank is pretty settled at this point as well-- all of the menace fish have passed on over time and I've been left with a fairly docile tank. It sounds like Sherlock deserves a mystery snail companion.

Ah, but what would you name a companion mystery snail? Agatha? Lenore?

Didn't Sherlock Holmes have some long-lost and problematic love affair? It's been awhile since I read those stories. Maybe I could find out what her name was and name the new snail that. LOL Though of course, I have no idea whether my Sherlock is a male or whether the other one would be a girl.

How about 'Phryne' from Miss Fisher's murder mysteries? Just pretend they are the genders you want - they won't care.

Ah, but what would you name a companion mystery snail? Agatha? Lenore? Maybe Jane, for Miss Marple? Or Ariadne after Ariadne Oliver, a recurring character in Agatha Christie's novels, a mystery writer who is sort of Miss Christie's alter ego.

You may be thinking of Irene Adler from "A Scandal in Bohemia," whom Holmes always referred to as " the woman."

Irene = peace. Seems like a great name for a snail!

I thought we'd lost Sherlock yesterday. He's huge, at least twice the size he was when I brought him home, and he wedged himself into one of Opie's hideys, which isn't big enough to accommodate his size. He did that once before and I got him out with no harm done. Then a couple of days ago, he did it again, and I hadn't dug him out of it because when I checked on him, he seemed happy and not stuck, just sitting there. But yesterday I cleaned tanks and thought I'd better get him out of it, as he hadn't seemed to move all day. He was thoroughly stuck, and his shell has a crack in it, and he didn't react when I touched him. I got him out as gently as I could and set him where I could watch him, and figured he was a goner. But eventually he poked his face out and waved his antennae at me and spent the evening oozing around over the little snails and darned near smothering them with his bulk. This morning, he's in a back corner doing the same thing. His shell isn't crushed, which will kill a snail, but it is definitely damaged. I hope it will heal and he'll be okay and isn't in pain. The little snails and Opie love that hidey and I'd hate to take it away, but if Sherlock isn't smart enough to stay out of it, I might have to.

You can mend a turtle shell with fast setting epoxy. With them you have to worry about bacteria getting in under the shell and creating infection. I don't know if there are the same issues with snails or not. I hope he's okay.

I don't know if I can keep him out of water long enough to let it set, even if it sets quickly, and it might leach into the water and make the rest of the snails and Opie sick. I'll do some research on fish sites and see if I can find out.

Poor guy. I can't offer any advice (never owned snails), but he is in good hands with you, I'm sure.
