I have a new fish. I bought two, but the second one died almost immediately, within minutes of releasing them from the bag the store sent them home in. The other is doing okay so far. He's a black-tailed platy. I have two yellow/gold platies (Arthur and Betsy) in a 10 gallon tank with a bunch of snails. Opie the betta is still in his own tank with his own snails. Harry was at first named Dory because he reminded me strongly of Dory in Finding Nemo -- he has this constant "gee, whiz" sort of attitude and a very, VERY short attention span, but then I started to get a male vibe from him and checked online for how to tell sex, and it turns out he's a boy, just like I thought. Harry has decided Betsy is his new best friend and they swim around in formation, and Arthur usually joins them, so here they all go in a pack, back and forth and up and down. If they provide me with babies, which I'm told is almost certain, and if I can save some from being eaten (platies eat their babies, ewwww), I'll move them in with Opie, who won't eat them (I hope).
I suspect the platies are eating some of the snails. There is certainly a high mortality rate among the ramshorns, though Sherlock is safe from them because he's so huge. They don't bother him. I suppose that keeps the snail population in check, and there are so many and they breed so enthusiastically that there's no danger of the fish wiping them out.
