I have a 2-year old Quaker named Bailey. He's been a joy until recently. Lots of cute chatter with an extensive vocabulary. My husband started working from home a few months ago. Normally we aren't home during the day and his noisy-ness didn't bother us (but the cleaning lady would tell us how loud he could get). But now it's bad - real bad. The screaming, screeching and squawking were constant. So, it was either get rid of him or move him into another room.
The next busiest room in our office is the kitchen, so I moved his cage there, next to two big windows. While he is still noisy the kitchen is on the other side of the house so my husband can conduct business without customers hearing that horrible squawking. So that part works. But then Bailey got mean. He bites...and bites hard -- and I knew it was because he had been moved. So, for a couple of weeks my husband (trying to get along with him), let him out during the day to roam wherever he wanted. That worked for awhile. Bailey was content to sit in my office, on the back of my chair which is next to my husband's office. He was quiet so that's all that mattered. In the evening, I put him back in his cage when the dogs come in. He's biting again. I cringe when he lands on my shoulder because I know its just a matter of time (minutes) when he'll bite me. It's SO HARD not to react - and I have failed when the bite draws blood. I react.
I've tried distracting him - and there's only so much you can do. He is aggressive to our granddaughter (who lives with us) - always has been. He's a one-person bird.
I hate to get rid of him - when he's nice...he's adorable. I hate not letting him out but the behavior is so bad that I can't stand to have him near anyone. I suppose I could just leave him in his cage.
How long do you suppose this bad behavior will last? I can wait him out if I thought there was light at the end of the tunnel. --gwen
