Hey y'all, I have a 13 yr old quaker named Maui. I have had him since he was 2 mos old and in the beginning I had so many questions and this forum was a god send and life saver. Maui will be 13 this year. I have noticed some slight changes in him that i attributed to him getting older. He sleeps a bit more and his nips when he is angry do not have any potency like they used to. In the last few weeks I have noticed that he growls and anything I have when I walk by. He used to just growl at something with wheels Lately he wants to spend more time with me and last week I took his cage apart for its deep clean and he has been having a hard time. I changed out some things that were old and wore out and put new in. He plays with some of them but he seems to bump into some. He has also had a few middle of the night squaks and when I check on him I think he has slipped. He is eating well and is still his Maui self. I think I have figured out that he cant see as well as he used to. Is this a possibilty? TIA

It does sound like he's losing his eyesight. Feeling more dependent on you and not liking the changes or movements around him are good clues. He's not really that old for a Quaker, and I really think needs to see a vet as soon as you can get him in. There are a lot of different things that can cause blindness in birds.

Thank you. I just moved here so it is taking me a bit to find an aviary vet. I have moved to northern Idaho. Does anyone out there know of a good one?

They're not easy to find outside of fair sized cities, are they? I did a quick search on the Association of Avian Vets website aav.site-ym.com/?page=basiccareand didn't see any in Idaho except the Boise area. Are you anywhere close to Pullman, WA? My alma mater is there, and they have a vet school. There are also a couple avian vets in Missoula, MT. Another alternative is just to call around to see who knows birds, even if they aren't certified avian.

Actually yes. I am about an hour north. I was focusing on Spokane but I had totally forgot about the awesome vet school at WSU. I was spoilt because the avian vet I had in Florida was the avian vet for a zoo and he was awesome. You are so right, they are hard to find.
Thank you again.
