This morning Oscar was doing his routine just sitting with me watching early TV and then he started to yawn. I know this is normal but after about 20 times I really started to get worried. I rubbed his throat and nothing changed. After a few more of these, I put him up on his perch thinking maybe he should drink some water.... but he didn't and then everything was okay. I think so anyway.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

Ralph will sometimes seem to be yawning when he has lots of pin feathers on his neck. I think that motion helps settle them into place so they aren't so irritating. He'll do that for a few minutes then will stop and get on with whatever he wants to do next. George the YCA used to the same thing when he was molting.

Maybe he didn't like your choice of TV program... Bonnie does this sometimes, but more when she began moulting. She also does it lots when I am scratching her head, but other times hardly at all and she seems fine. If you are really worried you could ask an avian vet about it.

Thank you for the information. I guess it is quite normal then. I really wish we had an avian vet here but the nearest one is 300 miles away. Boy I hope he doesn't get sick.

I have noticed that Beeker "yawns" when I rub his head a certain way. It seems like he's stretching out his jaw muscles so I can get to a certain spot? Maybe Oscar is requesting extra rubs on the sides of his head? Just a thought...

I believe I initially confused yawning or gasping with an attempt to adjust the crop... I've noticed that when Cupcake eats bread or crackers, she will do more of this motion-- initially I was certain it was yawning problem. Sometimes when she does it excessively I will give her a drop of apple cider vinegar to lick at. I figure if there is any sort of yeast overgrowth in the crop that will help.
I've definitely witnessed this sort of behavior extensively, at any rate, and so far it has not translated into a problem. I think there are a lot of different reasons why they might behave that way.

I read somewhere, don't remember where, that if they scratch near their ear it will cause a yawn reflex. It could also be that they are workin out

Buddy does that too..let's me know to let him rest. On the other hand tho,I use it to diffuse aggression from time to time with sweet talk and it works every time. . He goes from charging me to crawling up to my shoulder in nothing flat
