My husband has taught Rascal to play dead bird. He flips Rascal on his back and Rascal lays still while Harold touches his feet and moves his wings. The vet loves it. Evidently Rascal does not.
This morning Harold got Rascal out of his cage and said play dead bird. Rascal said no. Again, Harold said let's play dead bird. Rascal said No. Harold tried again and Rascal told him to shut up. First time for him to tell us no or shut up. I

This makes me wonder how many words Bonnie has learnt, just waiting to be used for the right occasions! And Siobhan, I am a bit ignorant as to internet slang so had to look up ROFL ("rolling on floor laughing", is that correct?). Sherri, how old is Rascal?

Rascal is 16 months old. We got him from a pet store when he was 4 months old.
He has 2 different laughs, he coughs, wolf whistles, and makes the clicking sound of fingernail clippers and kisses. The words he used most are step up, good boy, pretty baby, whisper, bye-bye, and tickle tickle. He has several other words that I can't think of right now.
He goes home (gets in his cage). He plays peekaboo by turning his head away then looking at you and saying peekaboo. When he gets a treat, he makes 2 kiss sounds as a thank you. Rascal is partly poop trained.
He is also an escape artist and loves to take electronics apart. He is a handful. I thought all quakers were that smart until we rescued a 2 year old quaker. Sugar is quieter and mostly better behaving. She waves at us and will say a few words to us after she is covered for the night.

You really have to appreciate a bird who will tell what he does or doesn't want without biting you. He sounds well named. Did you name him after observing him for a while, or is he fulfilling your prophecy? i wouldn't assume too much about Sugar's intelligence based on her more reserved behavior. If her environment in her early days was not very enriched, you may be seeing the consequences of that. And it could come down to a personality difference, too. You don't say how long ago you adopted her, but she may flower after being with you a while.

He earned his name within a few hours of getting him. And he goes through spells of biting. Usually when I dare make him mad by letting him see me pack for a weekend away.
We have had sugar for 8 months. I'm sure she was not paid much attention. Outside of her cage, she is very sweet. But she lets us know what she wants. She only wants one perch in her cage. All others she pushed out of the cage. She only plays with one toy.

Sugar sounds adorable (so does Rascal); she may get more confident as time goes on. Bonnie has biting episodes too. Similar to your situation, it's usually 'payback' for doing something she doesn't like (e.g. after she sees me get the vacuum cleaner - impending doom/disaster! ).

They have different personalities. Our Jade is the best talker out of eight birds, bullies everybody but Clyde, and knows how to use her words appropriately. You can actually converse with her. But she won't let you touch her and she won't step up and she chomps hard to make her point. Clyde is bossy and moody and pushes me around, but he must be sitting on me every minute he can get to me (unless he's busy eating).

he must be sitting on me every minute he can get to me (unless he's busy eating). Siobhan has pinpointed the number 1 priority of quakers (ours, at least)...feeding their faces comes first, followed by domination of the humans

I had to laugh just imagining the bird playing dead.... ha ha ha..... too cute for sure. All of the birds I read about on this site are truly amazing. Good parents I think.

Shah is starting to push me beyond breaking point. He screams constantly (I know he is upset about Pippin and Spike being together but it has been 3 weeks now). And then this morning at 4.30am I hear scrabbling sounds in his cage. So I tell him to go back to bed and he says "Step Up" and I say "NO Step Up" and he keeps repeating "Step Up" and I ignore him so then I get "Monkey Breath" said in a very grumpy voice. What a brat
