I just learned that the woman who normally trimmed Oscar's feathers and nails does not want to do it anymore. I must say I am very sad over this as I really do not want to be the one that does this for him. But I guess I have no choice. I would appreciate any advice on how to accomplish this task. I would tell the woman that it was better for me that she was the "bad guy" in Oscar's eyes.... now I have to be the "bad guy"..... geezzz I am so disappointed.
You might remember me writing about the horrible pet store we have here and people who have bought birds there would bring them to this woman and she is afraid that they might be carrying some illnesses therefore, has stopped having any other pets in her shop. I fully understand that but Oscar has been going there for years...... geeeezzzzz. Oh well.
Also.... there are no vets here that will handle birds..... so I need advice on how to handle the job without hurting Oscar and without becoming a "bad buy".
Thanks for your help.

I do Mr P's feathers myself but I keep those nail trimming sand perches in his cage for his toes. Once a year, when I take him to the vet, I have the vet do the beak and nails if necessary. We towel Mr P and although he acts like he hates it and sulks for a few minutes after, I don't think it bothers him as much as he ACTS like it does. Also, I always have my boyfriend hold him in the towel and I do the actual clipping. Afterward, he is mad at both of us anyway, but a few treats and he's happy again If you are not sure how much to clip, either follow the pattern if there still is one in his current clip or check out the you tube vids on wing clipping. Also (VERY IMPORTANT), I always have styptic powder on hand, IN ADVANCE, in case I accidently hit a blood feather. You can use cornstarch too. It's better to be prepared for this to happen and never have to use it, then to go scrambling for it while your FID is bleeding

Casey is 8 and never had her nails done, and they are fine, either she trims them a bit herself or her perches are doing the trick. Casey sits on my knee when I trim her wings, and she lets me spread them to trim. Like Sharyn said watch some videos to get the idea... better to start just doing a bit to get the hang of it rather than doing too much.

I take the easy way. I don't clip or trim. The nails do seem to take care of themselves when they have a good variety of perches.
If you do decide to trim his nails, you might find this link helpful. It's from the African Grey sister site: www.anafricangrey.ca/2012/11/16/nail-trimming/

Yeah Hair Cut and Neils cutting is good for humans and pets also. I know Casey is just 8 but i think you should trim her nails and hairs too..
