I am wondering if anyone here feeds prepared foods that one cooks, and if they have any recommendations? Happy went off pellets, and I was thinking that if I fed something like Bird Street Bistro foods in tandem with various new pellet types in her bowl, that would ensure good nutrition even if she's not eating the pellets. I just want to get her off seed ASAP.

I use Higgins Worldly Cuisines. Peppy seems to like all the options, though I think Agrican Sunset is the favored blend. He does pick around the fruits and veggies, though. I'm still trying to get him to accept pellets, too.

Thanks! I'm open to anything that isn't seed...my logic was that at least the cooked prepared food are a balanced diet so that even if she turns her beak up at pellets...she'll be healthy. I'll check Higgins out!

I agree the cooked diets are far better than seeds, but they're still not a perfect diet. They might be if Happy will eat all of it. Peppy goes for the rice, or quinoa, or whatever grain, and tends to leave the veggies and fruit in a nice little heap at the end. So I sprinkle the cooked food with something called, I think, Snack Attack Healthy Greens, also from Higgins, in an attempt to foil his determination to avoid all veggies. Always trying to outwit my birds, and usually coming up short.

Casey gets a combo, pellets available all the time, and something cooked for most dinners, like Peppy she loves her carbs, like rice, bulgar, pasta etc. I offer veggies too, she will go back and eat them about an hour after she has eaten her favs. She also loves meat and she gets tiny pieces of what we are eating if it is chicken or salmon. If I cook a meal that she doesn't like, I have little portions of food frozen in the freezer to bring out. Sometimes, they are loaded with stuff, but this time I have been very busy and just cooked up rice, pumpkin, egg and it's shell, and broccoli and froze it in tiny portions. She gobbles it down.

Yes I've noticed that Happy like pastas, rices, oatmeal, applesauce, and other soft, warm, mushy foods. I'm having a much harder time getting her to accept (or even try) anything that she has to 'bite' into...vegetables, fruits, and the like. She will only tongue these items and if it's a fruit, she'll lick up the juices. I'm considering maybe using a blender on these things and feeding that? Or doing that and adding crushed pellets to the mix? I'm just so concerned that she have a healthy, balanced, diet, and I'm trying to brainstorm.
We eat "with" her all the time, and offer items to her (when we're eating our dinner, we'll offer a bit of what we're eating like broccoli and other veg for instance.) Just like a toddler, she's more than happy to try to steal junk food but doesn't want the healthy foods! It's enough to make any parront tear their hair out.

Have you tried soaking the pellets? If Happy likes the soft stuff, she might go for them that way. You can try water, or a little juice or salt-free broth of something she likes. There are also mashes that might do the trick. Harrison's makes a couple different versions. One is meant for birds with allergies and doesn't contain corn, sunflower seed, and something else I can't remember. You could add water to make a porridge. Peppy has not fallen for this the few times I've tried so far, but I haven't given up hope.

Oscar used to like his pellets if they were soaked in non sugar apple juice but not anymore but maybe Happy would. He is eating like Happy does and I have noticed he prefers warm food but not warm vegetables (except potato). When I give him broccoli he only wants the stem and that must be peeled and made into little spears for him. Absolute favorite vegetable is a complete stalk of romaine lettuce. He eats a whole one daily and sometimes two. He likes most fruits so because he is eating veggies, fruits, and things I consider healthy I stopped worrying about the pellets like I used to. He still likes seeds and prefers the fruit brand over the vegetable brand and is not fond of sunflower seeds. He looks healthy..... washroom issues are good.... so I am happy.

I use the Pretty Bird brand of cooked food (Birdy Banquet I think). Some of the things in it (e.g., potatoes) Kermit doesn't eat, but he likes the beans, pasta, rice, corn, etc. that are in it. I make a big batch then freeze it in weekly portions. I've been using it for 15 years and glad they still make it as Kermit hates change with his food.
