I recently adopted a second Quaker and noticed he is much larger than my first, Rio. I don't actually know the gender of either. Verde, the new one, is larger, not just in body mass but his feet and everything. He has a lighter colored beak and nails too. I wasn't sure if he might actually be overweight. He also barely talks, while Rio talks a lot. They are about the same age, about 2 years old. His previous owner had him since he was a chick. Rio has been in two homes before me. I'm wondering why there are these differences, if it might just be breeding or something else and if it can possibly indicate gender. I did just send off for two DNA sexing kits because I'm curious.

I have a Blue Quaker and my friend has a Green. Both are male. My bird is smaller weighs a lot less. I wonder if this is true of all varieties?

My understanding is that the blue quakers tend to be smaller than the greenies

There is quite a lot of variation in size among QPs. A while ago at a pet store, I saw a 5-month-old Quaker who was almost twice Ralph's size. There's a QP at a local pet store now who is a little bigger than Ralph, and one at another store who is slightly smaller. Verde may not be overweight, it may just be that he's one of the larger QPs and Rio is one of the smaller ones. If there are any issues with weight, the vet will point them out at Verde's well-bird checkup.
Not all Quakers are noisy or talkative either. Some are chatterboxes; some, like Ralph, are on the quiet side. Verde may have more to say once he's settled into his new home; it's pretty common for any parrot to be a bit quiet in a new situation.

When it's all said and done, you may be happy that Verde is sort of quiet! LOL

So they are both green, right? 'Verde' means green? Bonnie is blue and weighs 95-100 grams, which I understand is smallish. Good on you for taking on 2 quakers...one is enough for us!

Jade is noticeably plumper than Clyde, but she's not fat, it's just her body shape. She's very athletic and clambers around in her cage like a gymnast, while Clyde is a perch potato and won't even fly over to me if he can convince me to come and get him instead. LOL It's probably partly a matter of genetics, and some is exercise and muscle development. Jade plays with her toys and flies more than he does, and is just generally more active.

Good luck with the second Quaker. I've noticed that Popsy chatters and preens herself just before she goes to sleep, sounds as though she is having a conversation with herself, then talks in her sleep - so funny. Now it's getting cooler she looks as though she is getting fatter, but think she is just fluffing herself up.

Maybe Clyde 'disapproving' and being a perch potato go hand in hand, Siobhan... .
Hey, prettybabyrio, let us know what the DNA tests say when you get the results. Perhaps there is a link between colour and gender, who knows?
