Hi all! Chewy is now 1 year old and he wakes up and chooses grumpy every day. There hasn’t been any change in routine but he is now becoming more aggressive. He has taken a dislike to my husband. He actually has tried to hump my hand a few times. I don’t pet him on his body. Just his head. He has never been big into letting me pet him anyway. He’s more of a rough houser. He used to love to play but now just wants to bite aggressively.
Any suggestions? He has plenty of toys and really likes his cage. I cover it at night for sleep. He sleeps from about 9:00 on to 7:00 am. Is that enough? He gets outside time for several hours every day. I just move his cage out onto the back porch. He also gets a few hours outside of the cage every day.

Chewy sounds like Casey when he was young. He liked everyone at first but as he got older he picked 2 favourites It’s s aslo summer and hot, at least it is here and that affects their hormones and attitudes too Maybe try less playtime’snd petting his head for a few days to see if that helps. Also cut out any mushy food so it doesn’t seem like you are his mate regurgitating Just stick to pellets for the week
Maybe if your husband takes his time talking to him he can once again be nice to both of you. Though I have to say. It took Casey years to like my husband but part of that was he was worried he might get bitten.

Thank you! Yes chewy did bite my husband and now I think the dislike is mutual unfortunately. He will sometimes bite at me too but never to the extent of drawing blood. I do give him fruits that are soft and sometimes cooked sweet potato. So I should avoid those for a week, right? I’ve been doing some reading up and supposedly quakers are cuddlers and affectionate. Chewy has been pretty feisty from the beginning. I would be so shocked if he sat still long enough to cuddle. Lol. He is constantly chewing. He doesn’t seem scared or timid of anything.
He also is not a talker. That’s not a big deal to me, I just think it would be so fun. I do talk to him a lot. I just worry that I’m doing something wrong. Or maybe he’s just a high strung personality.

Every parrot has his/her own personality and character, so generalizations about any type of parrot often don't apply. Quakers have the reputation for being cage aggressive, and my QP Ralph isn't. They have the reputation for being noisy, and Ralph normally isn't. Ralph is not a cuddly parrot either, and it's possible that Chewy is another non-cuddly Quaker. As he gets older, Chewy may be calmer and more willing to sit still; he's still very young. As Caseysmom pointed out, it is the time of year for hormones to kick in. Ralph is normally even-tempered, but when the hormones are in gear, he gets grumpy from time to time and when he's grumpy, he bites more often, and squawks a lot more too. Maybe a couple extra hours' sleep would help. When Ralph is especially hormonal, he gets put to bed a little earlier than normal, and is usually calmer and not so grouchy the next day. Keep working on teaching Chewy to speak. Some parrots take longer to pick up human speech, and, as I already said, Chewy is still quite young.

Thank you for your response! I have been putting him to bed earlier these past few nights. He’s still a grumpy boy in the morning but is much better by afternoon. I’m not a morning person so I get it. Lol. He has definitely become more territorial of his cage. I really appreciate y’all’s input!
