Hi, everyone, I'm going to start my first thread with a weird and very specific question. My happy home is located below ground enough to have some strange things happen that make the apartment fill with a sewer-outflow smell. Pre-parrot, we obsessively burned candles to overcome this nastiness. Since Barnaby's arrival, I've been trying to find alternatives, but wow, there aren't many. I have tried grinding coffee (effective, but really, how many times in a day do you need to do this?) and boiling cinnamon sticks (nice, but not always powerful enough). Any other thoughts? Or, do you know of any types of candles that would NOT be toxic for QP?

The best solution would be eliminating the source of the smell. It's quite possible there is a problem with the sewer lines, either inside or outside the building. If there is, it should be corrected. I really don't know of anything that would be both safe and effective in covering up the smell. There's some debate about whether or not it's safe to burn any kind of candles where parrots are present, and any that would have a strong enough scent to hide the sewer smell could still be potentially harmful to birds.

Yep, these are pretty much my thoughts as well, CNYGuy-- but for a whole host of reasons, it's low on the Stuff That Needs To Be Corrected list over here. Sigh. Thanks for replying, though!

I know too well that it can be tough to get things done when you rent. Maybe a good air filter would help. You might try boiling whole cloves, which have a stronger smell than cinnamon. Unfortunately, most anything commercially scented wouldn't be safe to use around parrots.
