Hi, I live in Spain and about 6 months ago was asked to look after a Quaker Parrot & the owner has not come back for it, but I and love it. Don't know if it's male or female, but not concerned about knowing. It thinks I'm it's mother and only allows me around it's cage, attacking anyone else who approaches. It's just started to talk after many, many weeks of constant repetition and often says 'step up' when it wants to be out of it's cage.
I have become so obsessed that I can't wait to tell people about Popeye and bore them to death. So I'm going to SHUT UP now, or I will be here all night talking about my wonderful parrot.

Welcome to you and Popeye! Around here, you're actually expected to talk a lot about your Quaker parrot. We all like to do that.

Hi and welcome, Popeye and his/her Human Slave. You have a captive audience here; we are all besotted with Quakers!

Hello to you and Popeye. That sounds similar to my own introduction to birds. A friend asked me to take care of his lovebird, and I was smitten. My friend didn't actually mean to abandon him, but I had him long enough to form a bond, and that was that. No one will criticize you here for going on about your Quaker. My husband is from Madrid, though he hasn't been there for many years. I'd love to see Spain. I hear the food is wonderful.

Thank you for your kind welcome everyone, I've changed my parrot's name to Popsy as we think it's a girl. She is sitting on my hand as I type trying to peck on the keys. We've just had dinner and she always joins us at meal time, taking food from the plate so we have to be very vigilant to what she takes. Her favourite thing is to eat from the mouth, so funny. I tried to give her, her own bowl, but no she prefers to steal food. The other thing she loves to do, (which she is doing now as I type) is take the cutlery off the plate, chew it a little then drop it on the floor lol. Do all parrots like to chew on metal? Nice to speak to you all, Lee
ps easttex - yes the food is excellent and the weather amazing

Hi again, Lee and Popsy! Just watch your laptop keys - don't leave them unattended as they will 'migrate' (Bonnie likes ripping them completely off). Yes, QPs love stealing food from your plate or your mouth if you let them (we don't let Bonnie do it, but she NEVER gives up trying). And she loves shiny metal things. The common theme I've noticed so far, about Quakers, is their complete lack of etiquette and their fearless personalities...but they make me laugh a lot! .

Bonnie sounds as mischievous as Popsy, they are funny birds. I am trying toilet train Popsy to fly back to her cage and was winning, except just recently she has started pooping everywhere again - any tips? or is it just perseverance?

Sorry, no tips regarding toilet training...Bonnie is about 11 months old and just poops wherever she wishes. Her favourite places are my clean clothes, my laptop screen, top of table lamps, you name it! We just run around cleaning up after her. I have to admit we haven't tried to train her (don't have the time). Sometimes she does little laughing noises after pooping in places she knows are inconvenient and most difficult to clean... . Well, familiarity breeds contempt, as they say!

I think it might complicate things that you can't be there to reward Popsy (cute name) every time she poops in her cage. You might have better luck training her to poop into a trash can or something like that. if she can be rewarded consistently, she might be better able to make the connection. I had a lovebird who would go on cue. It was the sweetest thing - even if he had nothing, he would go into the stance and give it a try.
