Hi everyone! I have a quaker named Silver. He (seller told us that it is a boy, DNA not tested, it's quite high cost in my country) is almost 2 years old (will be in July)/ We took him a small birdie. He was fed from the hands of a man, but then the bird sat separately in a cage for about a month and began to be afraid of people. I had to bother him again. The first year everything was fine, the bird was affectionate and sweet. Then aggression began, which I attributed to hormones or territorial aggression. That is, the bird was a year old and it became aggressive. Now he is aggressive already since September. He is not attacking my husband, but he allways bites me too hard.
I can pass by when the bird sits on the door or on the closet and it clings to my hair or face. I understand territorial aggression when he tries to protect his cage, but the rest of the apartment is our home and our territory. It is not possible to keep the bird locked in a cage all time. He has a rather large cage, which stands in a separate "room", such as a loggia. He has his own toys, a place for swimming. It eats varied and fully. We cover the cage with a thick blanket for the night, no extraneous sounds prevent the bird from interfering.
At the beginning of September 2019, when aggression began, we thought it was a molt period. That the bird is irritable due to the inconvenience of molting. But the molt was gone, and the bird remained aggressive after entering the phase of hormones in February. He constantly wants to mate with my hand (already the 4th month!), I do not let him to do this. The second hand he attacks and bites very hard. There are days when a bird is nice and fluffy and wants to be scratched on the head. I always scratch only the head, without touching the rest of the body.
I really don't know what to do, since aggression has not passed for more than 9 months. And next month we will have a baby, I worry that the bird will attack and bite the baby. And the option to keep the bird constantly in a cage under the covers also does not suit me. Because without a blanket, Silver yells to let him out without any pause. The person from whom we bought the bird also has a 4-year-old Quaker and not once in all 4 years did his bird bite anyone and did not express aggression. This is according to him.
We did not teach bird any tricks and for all 2 years he knows only 2 words, although we are talking with him, we are trying to teach him more words. It may be worth mentioning that before Silver we had another quaker, but unfortunately he quickly died for unknown reasons, goiter inflammation is possible. He was only 9 months old and it was a dear bird, he was very curious and friendly. Maybe the behavioral problems didn’t come out.
I'm desperate, really don't know what to do. Rehome? But who wants to take such an aggressive bird? Still I love this blue demon and want him to live with us for a long life.
Thank you for your answers, sorry for my English. Please, try to write me without any slang because I don’t understand, and the translator will not prompt. Why am I asking for advice here? Because on our forums I did not find answers to any questions at all.
Thank you again!
