We just brought home our four month old Quaker this past weekend. How long should we wait for him to settle in and get used to us before we start trying to handle him Any? He gets out of his cage now and sits on top of it but anytime we get near he flies off so we just let him fly back to it on his own. don't want him to get hurt or nothing

It's really not possible to predict exactly how long it will take for a parrot to be ready to be handled by his new human companions-- every parrot is different. It could take only a few days, several weeks or even months. Just take things slowly and let your new QP set the pace for interactions. In the beginning, it's a good idea to just sit calmly near your parrot's cage and talk softly to him. That helps him get used to you, the sound of your voice and your body language. You might try offering treats to your parrot while you're sitting with him. Be patient and take all the time that's needed and as your parrot becomes more comfortable with you he'll likely be ready to be handled.

Cnyguy is right, don't force close interaction until your parrot is ready. If you approach and he shies away, he's not ready. Go slow so he knows he is safe. He might decide to fly to you from the top of his cage when he is comfortable.
