Hi, I am brand new to this forum and new, new, new to bird ownership. I did have a parakeet or two as a kid but they were cared for by my parents.
I have a beautiful, blue Quaker boy that is about 3 Months old. I named him Bittacus, not after the insect, lol. It's an interesting name with a cool fact behind it in regards to parrots, etc.. I got him about 2 weeks ago and started working with him about 5 days ago, I was advised to let him get accustomed to his new home in a big cage for a week or two. He was kept with his siblings in a fish tank when I got him. I would appreciate any tips, suggestions and guidance that all you experienced folks can share. He was handfed and is pretty friendly. He currently has his wings clipped and I think I will continue to do that until he's trained fairly well. I will do that more for safety than anything else. We have extremely high ceilings and 4 dogs. I am only worried about one of our dogs but that's all it takes, is one. I have ordered some training DVD's but they haven't arrived yet. For now I am spending at least an hour a day with him out of his cage and talk to him throughout the day. We keep his cage with us in our family room. This is where there are people and T.V. for just about the entire day. I did a good bit of reading before purchasing Bittacus and was anticipating a lot of playing with toys and enjoying snacks, etc. but he doesn't seem to be into treats too much and hardly plays with toys. I have given him a ton of toys so far but I haven't overcrowded the cage. I have given him different textures and egg crates with cereal in it and ropes and straw, etc. I'm sure he'll come around with those things. I'm glad to have found this site and look forward to learning and sharing as I learn. Thank you very much.
