Is there any way I can roughly determine the age of my Quaker parrot? My neighbor bought her from a bird shop about 5-6 years ago, and they ended up giving her to me awhile back. Her leg band says 99, but I just can’t imagine she’s 20 years old.

It's difficult to judge the age of a mature Quaker parrot; they change little in appearance as they get older. Unfortunately, there are no standards for what is on a leg band. The year the parrot was hatched is often included on the band, but not always. Sometimes it's merely a code number meaningless to anyone but the breeder. It is possible that 99 is the year your parrot was hatched, but it could just as easily stand for something else. Sorry that I couldn't be more helpful in giving you a definitive answer.

I just rescued a blue Quaker. The leg band is blue. It reads. JAN 98. Wondering what it means. I think hatch date of 98?
