He's feeling better. He's figured out how to eat. I gave Freddie some millet yesterday and Benjy went crazy for it. He never had any interest in millet before. Freddie was startled that he suddenly had to share, so I put out extra to make sure there was enough for both of them. Benjy is pooping and it looks normal. I'm quite encouraged for him. He wouldn't accept hand-feeding at all, and fought me so much that I was afraid it was too stressful. I leave chopped up budgie pellets and a shallow dish of water where he can get to them easily, but he prefers to eat his regular food.

With no top beak to grind against it, Benjy's bottom beak is growing straight up. I don't know what to do. I used to trim his top beak when it got too long, but it was pretty easy to do. I'm afraid to try trimming this. But something has to be done and soon. We don't have a certified avian vet in town, though one small animal vet can treat birds for simple things.

It would be best for Benjy to be examined by an avian certified vet, even if it's necessary to travel to another town. You might at least have a consultation with the local vet to get some recommendations. It seems like it would be a rather delicate and difficult thing to try to trim the lower beak.

I'm going to have to see if I can get a friend to take him. I can't get off work for that and it would be the better part of a weekday. They're not open on weekends.

"Take him"....as in to the vet, or are you thinking about rehoming Benjy?
I honestly don't think you need to do anything so drastic as rehoming him. Asking a friend to take him to the vet is a great idea, though. Just so someone can look at him.
I absolutely understand that there's only so much you can do and you'll get no judgment from me. You're an amazing mama to your babies. 💕

Take him to the vet. She makes regular trips there with hers and knows right where to go and I've never been there. She's self-employed and has more freedom in her schedule than I do, chained to my reporter's desk as I am. On top of Benjy's situation, my starling has begun having regular seizures, and nobody will see a starling, not even the certified avian vet. A starling is a "wild" bird and though it's legal to keep one in this state, vets won't treat them.

Oh no!!! Wildlife rehabilitation centers have vets, right? Maybe you could take her there?
That's great news for Benjy! 😊

I've sent two messages to the local wildlife rehab and haven't heard back. They know quite a lot and might have some ideas without having to try to get a vet to look at her. They have dealt with almost every ailment you could think of in everything from bald eagles to sparrows. The only common denominator I've been able to pinpoint is that she has the seizures around 9 p.m., but I'm at work all day and for all I know, she's having them when I'm not there.

Much against his will, I made Benjy let me examine him last night and there's a tiny bit of beak growing back. I've tried to look several times and he flaps around and gets stressed, so I haven't forced this issue for about a week. That tiny bit gives me hope the whole thing will grow back in time.

He is seriously the world's toughest budgie. He ought to have a cape and a secret identity.

Benjy has gone through a lot and stayed strong. Superbudgie maybe? Hope that the beak will grow back. Hope too that Ringo is doing better.
