Jade loves her new home and her new mama loves her. I should have done this years ago, and not just for Benjy's sake, but for Jade's. Jade would never let me touch anything but her beak. She guarded her cage ferociously and almost never left it, even though her cage was constantly open. I have tried, over the years, to get her to step up, to sit on my lap, to let me stroke her head, and never made much if any headway. I know she WANTED to. I could see it in her eyes as she watched me with Clyde and the others. She WANTED to be petted and to sit on me like they did.
The very first day at her new home, with her cage left behind at my house (that was probably the secret right there), she was sitting on Brenda's arm and shoulder, giving and getting kisses, having her head petted, making friends with Brenda's two Quakers and fitting in as if she'd always lived there. Brenda doesn't cage anyone at her house and the whole place is set up for the convenience and happiness of the birds. Perches and toys and food and water strategically placed everywhere, and a double-door entry so nobody can accidentally get outside.
I wanted to wait to be sure Jade would be okay with Brenda (and now I feel silly for even worrying about it), but now that I'm sure Jade and Brenda are both happy, I'm going to dispose of Jade's cage and give her toys to the others. Clyde and Benjy sleep in Clyde's cage (with the door open) and that's about the only time anyone goes into that cage, and Freddie won't go into a cage at all. He sleeps on a hanging lamp.

It's great that Jade is happy in her new home. Hope that it stays that way. Really, you did make slow progress with Jade over the years, always in small steps and sometimes there were steps backward. You tried very hard to help her to progress with lots of patience and persistence. Give yourself credit for that. Hope that things are going well for Benjy and the rest of the flock.

Benjy is learning to get by without his beak. He ate some seeds last night and I keep budgie pellets, chopped up into tiny pieces, in a dish on top of his cage next to a shallow dish of water to make it easier for him. He continues to come over to sit on my hand and chirps and talks just as before. He's a tough little thing, you gotta give him credit for that.

He and I are both progressing as quickly as can be expected. He's eating and pooping and not sleeping as much as he did at first. But sleep is healing, and as long as he was pooping normally, I figured the sleep was good for him.
