First time poster, and frustrated owner hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I have a 20 year old Quaker that has been having issues with his left toe (it curls inwards), for the past few years and only recently is it becoming a bigger issue.
I've tried red palm oil, and pushing back the toe each time he's on his perch to stretch it back. Lotions, and oils to keep his little legs hydrated (did I mention he's been feather plucking the insides of both legs, and now just recently his chest?), and even tried children's Benadryl to see if that helped thinking it was allergies, or itchiness.
But now his grip is loose, and he sometimes lifts and protects his bad leg. He limps, and hobbles around, and has slowed down. Even his talking spurts have become further, and further apart. He has good days, and bad days, and today is one of the bad ones.
I'm trying CBD oil, and it seems to help a little....
Rescue Remedy for pets did nothing but gave him the runs (in an attempt to stop the plucking)
And my vet prescribed Metacam but it makes him a zombie, and I don't want to use that long term, because I know he's old, but has more life in him, and using Metacam long term is not recommended (did some research), but I need another anti-inflammatory in my arsenal for these bad days.
Has anyone had similar problems with older birds and arthritis and what do you use to help?
I am willing to try anything to ensure his senior years are still good ones.
I also tried to upload a picture, but I don't think it worked...
He's on Instagram as snookiebear_ and you can see in some of the pictures his plucking and foot.
Anything advice will be more than welcome!
