I have been at a loss as to how to keep Rocky AND the little birds all happy, when Rocky demands so much attention and shrieks if he doesn't get it. I started trying to take him into their room for visits. The first time he was terrified and Clyde tried to challenge him, which scared me. so we only stayed a moment. Then I got the idea to put Rocky on his rolling perch so I didn't have to hold him for him to be in that room, which would allow me to defend smaller birds from harm if necessary since my hands would be free. That worked and little by little, I have conditioned Rocky to spend longer and longer in their room. He sits on his perch and observes, for the most part, and I sit a distance away with the small birds and everyone's pretty happy. It also works in Ringo Starling's room. Her X-Wing style of flying startles him, but she never lands within his reach. She has specific places she likes to land -- the curtain rod, the top of the door, the top of her cage, and me. Again, he observes and it seems to work. I can even play my instruments a little bit, while Ringo kibbitzes and critiques.
I cleaned Rocky's cage the other day and I had to move a toy out of the way. I forgot to put it back where it belonged. This morning, Rocky was making a noise that to non-parrot people would have sounded like fussy "I'm trying to be annoying," but I noticed the note that really means, "I'm upset by something." It took a few minutes to figure out what it was, and once I moved the toy back to its proper position, he settled right down. I'm pretty well-trained.

It's great that Rocky is becoming used to being around the other birds. It isn't necessary for them all to become best friends, but if they can be in the same room together without major squabbles, that's a good thing. As well-trained as you are, it might be time to review the chapter in the slave manual on putting things back where they belong (usually exactly where they were before).

That's why I said I'm "pretty well-trained." LOL Training is never complete when one's trainer is a parrot. And when you have five of them training you at once, you are also often confused.

I suppose that having a parrot who rearranges her own toys might add to the confusion. I know that my two have different ideas about how I ought to be trained, so it has to be even more complicated with five birds doing the training.

Siobhan, it's simply not good enough. With all your experience you ought to be able to keep up with the requirements of ALL your bird masters/mistresses!
