My husband and I got Squirt when he was 8 weeks old. He is now 5 months old and seems to be trying to mate with my 8 year old Sweetea. We don't know the sex of either birdie, and They are always supervised when close to each other.
I read that Quakers aren't sexually mature until they are 18 months old. Is this way too young for Squirt to begin this type of behavior?
Also, since Squirt is the one who try's to get on top and Sweetea kind of "presents" herself, does this mean that Squirt is a boy and Sweetea is a girl? Or will same sexes try to mate?
Any advice?

Sexual maurity at 18 months is a generalization, more of an average age for a QP to reach full sexual maturity. Some parrots, like Squirt, may show interest at an earlier age.
Sometimes, a parrot will try to mate with another parrot of the same sex.

Thank you! It's really funny to see because Squirt just doesn't seem to know what he is doing and Sweetea just looks like she likes being fed! I kind of hope they are the same sex. My husband and I aren't equipped to raise baby Quakers! Heres a picture of their first cuddle
