My bird has just started sleeping on bottom of cage floor. This behaviour is new and I have not seen this in 24 years. He seems completely fine otherwise, eating, pooping, vocalizing, preening, all normal behaviour. During the day he will climb to tallest perch and hang out there. But it's just when lights are out for night time he goes to bottom to sleep . I pick him up and put him on a perch but he will just go back down . Anyone's bird does this but is not sick? I'm hoping it is behavioural and not an illness. I gave a vet appt scheduled in a few days but just hoping for some feedback.

Sorry to hear this...some elderly birds develop arthritis and as time goes on,they have difficulty staying on perch for extended periods. We had a 22 yr old cockatiel who did this sometimes. We got him a flat 4x4 piece of wood covered in felt like material that he used.the bottom bars allow him to splay out his feet dispersing his weight, which maybe why he does it. Bring this up to your vet on the visit. I know there's something out there on the web,so see if you can read up on it in the meantime. My bird buddy is almost 2,but I was thinking about building one for him with the piece of wood right in front of me ! Just haven't gotten around to it. It mounts in the corner secured by washers and wing bolts by the way. Best wishes and happy new year! Dinucci

Thanks! You have given me something to think about. I will discuss with vet on Friday. He does stand on perches with no problem during day time. But I will still look into this possibility.

Our Bonnie likes sleeping on a ledge or in a happy hut. I'm just guessing, but I think it's because she can just lie on her tummy rather than having to grip with her feet whilst sleeping.

Just wanted to let you all know that my bird saved my life. He was detecting a gas leak from a newly installed furnace. He was sleeping on bottom of cage because it was making him feel sick. I happen to finally smell the leak and had it fixed. He is good now. Sleeping in his usual spot up high.

So glad you are both ok now. Neat that your quaker alerted you to the problem

That was a potentially dangerous situation and it's good that you were able to find out what was wrong and correct it. Glad that you and your parrot are both OK.

Wow! That is a huge stroke of luck that your quaker changed his behaviour and that you were switched on enough to figure it out. Phew. Glad you are all OK.
