Hi all We are now on day 5 with our parent reared male 4 month old QP He is definitely settling but today has taken to shuffling up and down his perch sometimes flapping his wings and no other way to describe it like a guinea pig kind of gweeking? ? It's not the screeching he was doing when he was first here and then he starts purring like a cat?! Sorry I know this sounds nuts I'm just wondering if it's normal? I think he may be a bit bored - part of it was definitely because he had the wrong food he calmed down when I changed it but he's off again. He likes coming out of his cage but it's early days and he doesn't take food from my hand yet so I'm worried as it's getting him back in the cage is really tricky and I don't want to scare him. I'm sat next to him working so it's not flock calling unless it's that my son's at school? He has fresh water and toys Any help greatly appreciated Chloe

I'm not sure, but that sounds similar to how Peppy behaves before going down to take a bath. Does Cody have something he can bathe in inside his cage? (Besides his drinking water, which they will use if there is nothing else.)

Ooh thank you I hadn't thought of that and didn't want to spray him incase it scared him with him still being a little unsure of us. I've just put some water in a low sided pot that he's now muttering at! Will see! Thank you!

Yes!! Thank you! Cody has just been splashing about in his bath so happy and chattering away. He's looking a bit bedraggled now but it's definitely what he wanted and also I think he was telling me he really doesn't like dried bananas - only fresh. As soon as I took them out he stopped shouting at me. Wow a breakthrough day! Thank you very much

It's fun when you can start figuring out what they want. Sometimes, anyway. Gotta warn you, though. You're on the path to total servitude.

The purring is usually a sign of a happy and contented Quaker. Mixed in with his other sounds, Cody may have had a different meaning in mind.

I don't know what noise a guinea pig makes...Bonnie does a kind of miniature barking/laughing noise, the 'purring' noise like Gary was referring to (when I scratch her head she puts her head sideways, closes her eyes and does this little groaning sound - very cute!) and a chicken-clucking noise when she's happy (e.g., when she goes in her happy hut before going to sleep).
I was thinking that if Cody is a really young bird the flapping might be the begging behaviour they do for a while after learning to eat on their own - does bob his head up and down when he does the flapping?
It's good that he wanted to have a bath!

Hello All and thank you very much for all your replies - this site is great and apologies if all my questions are driving you nuts - I am a complete novice with parrots (can you guess?!!) Cody is squeaking - the easiest way to describe it is gweeeek gweeek gweeek type noise?!(sorry!!) its not the screeching noise if we go out the room - which actually now stops if we say goodbye to him. My husband was talking to him this morning and he started flapping his wings and stamping his feet and was purring and shouting - he got so excited. Ive put his bath tub in this morning and he went mental again before dive bombing into it - its definitely his new toy! Cody is 4 months old and seems very particular about his food - I put some cucumber in this morning and he went mental until I took it out and replaced it with sweetcorn which made him settle. Oh my god - hes taking over and definitely knows what he wants for such a young man!! He hasnt started talking yet but I think hes maybe a little young and we are now on day 6 so very early days! He's brilliant and we are slowly learning what he wants with his various calls and noises. Its great that the purring is happiness as he was so nervous when we first got him. No doubt tomorrow will bring more questions!!! Thank you x

Cody is 4 months old and seems very particular about his food Quakers tend to be fussy about food. I think they fancy themselves to be gourmets of discriminating taste. Ask all the questions you want. Someone around here is likely to have a satisfactory answer for you. Whether new to parrots (like you), or with nearly 45 years of living with parrots (like me), there are always new things to learn.
