2 days ago I got a 4 month old quaker. He is not hand reared. On the first day he was so petrified of me, I took some advice from other sites and I didnt go to near him (when I did he screamed and hid at the back of the cage). So I sat where I felt he was comfortable and regularly spoke to him for about 15 minutes at a time. Yesterday, day two, I was out most of the day. But before I left and when I got home I did the same talking to him from a distance sessions.
Today I had to spend 4 hours with him in my small kitchen as I was having flooring put down in the rest of the flat and the kitchen was the only room I could go in. I sat a fair distance away from him and spent most of the time just on my phone but I did the talking sessions every so often. He didn't seem to mind me being there aslong as I gave him space and he actually stayed at the front of the cage and ate infront of me without bother.. which he wouldn't do before. For the last hour or so he started doing short sharp bursts of screaming.. even if I wasn't looking at him. it wasnt the same screaming he does when hes scared and I get to close. I thought it was because he was getting sick of me constantly being there.
When he screamed I ignored it if he did a few..but if he carried on I would simply put a sheet over his cage until he calmed down (I dont know if this is the best thing to do??)
Then I got on with cleaning up after the work man and he was fine. Then I moved him back into the sitting room and I sat and watched the tele. He was ok for about 45 minutes and then he started doing the same short sharp screaming. The sheet wasn't really working so as it was about to be sunset anyway, I wheeled his cage into the bedroom so I could leave the blind open and let him see the sun set (I heard it's good to do this and get them to go to sleep with the sun down). Anyway he still did the screaming. So I moved him back into the sitting room with me and he did it again once and then calmed down with a sheet over him as I think he was tired. So then I left him in the sitting room with all the lights off while I had a bath. He fell asleep and ive wheeled him into the bedroom so I can watch the tele without disturbing him.
Anyway I just want to know what im doing right/wrong and what the best step would be to a) start taming him and b)try and stop the screaming
Any other helpful new quaker owner advice would be great
