I finally made the difficult decision to leave teaching for an extended period.
Many of you will remember I came up to Darwin partly because I was unhappy with the Victorian Education system and it was kind of an experiment to see if the NT Education Government system was any better.
Well, the answer is "yes", it's a LOT better....but they are heading the same way as VIC in terms of ridiculous administration workload. Even in the 15 months I've been here the amount of accountability and admin has increased markedly.
A few weeks ago I applied for a position and got it, so I'm starting that on Monday morning (today was the last day of Term 2 at school, so the school is closed for 3 weeks). It's as a Local Area Co-ordinator working for a company that is rolling out the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Basically I will visit disabled people, determine what their needs are and connect them with the services that can help them. I will also liaise with community businesses and services and try to work out ways they can better cater for people with disabilities.
It's quite a pay cut, but as long as I can pay my bills I'll be happy and when I walk in the door at the end of the working day - I won't have to do more work (I've been doing 15-20 hours of unpaid work at home per week)!
So I'm quite excited to see what Monday brings. Today was my last day at my school (although it's actually the best school I've ever taught in & if I wanted to stay in teaching I wouldn't want to teach anywhere else).
My school Principal was really good about it and said if I change my mind I will always have work there if I ever want to come back.
