We lost Otey yesterday around 10:30 in the morning. We keep all our FIDS in our bedroom (long story), and I had just popped in there about 30 minutes earlier with some laundry. He was hale and hearty, squawking and demanding his usual Fruity Pebbles (Zupreem pellets) for breakfast. When I came in again, he was gone. I found him on the floor of his cage, with Aldo trying to groom him. HIs poor little body was still warm.
We're figuring he just died from a heart attack or something. My mom's parakeet did the same thing--fine one minute and dropped off the perch the next. Parakeet was at least 15, which is really old for a budgie.
Otey's band indicated that he was hatched here in Virginia in April 1993. So he had a good long life. He was spoiled rotten, indulged in every way, competely in love with our grown son, alarm called when he spotted the mailman or anyone in a hat (except said son), and taught us a lot about why FIDs are pretty much our companions of choice now. He was funny, cranky, vocal, interested in everything, and a wonderful cage companion to Aldo who is more than 15 years his junior. We will miss his antics and personality and are thankful for the 6 years we had together.

Sorry to hear about Otey's passing. You gave him a good, loving home for those six years, and I know he'll missed.

So sorry to hear about Otey. He sounds like a wonderful companion and character. No doubt you have great memories of him and, like cnyguy said, he had a wonderful home while he was with you. All the best.
