just brought my new blue Quaker home today. She is quiet, puffed and when I approach her she shakes and chatters a bit. Do I need to worry? I saw her eat but haven’t seen her drink yet. She’s has been weaned and eating a mix of seeds and pellets for 5 days. Should I just let her settle today? Any information on what I need to watch for is appreciated! Named her Kui (coo-ee)

Welcome to you and Kui. It's perfectly normal for a parrot to be quiet and less active when first arriving in a new home. It's also normal for them to shy away from food and water at first, but it usually doesn't take long for the parrot to eat and drink. Kui definitely needs time to study her new surroundings and begin to adjust to them. You might just sit as close to her cage as she's comfortable with and talk softly to her to help her get used to you and the sound of your voice. Let her take things at her own pace and she should begin to relax a bit and start getting used to her new home.

Hi there & welcome to you and Kui! Are you in Australia? (I am...Coo-eee!) The shaking you mention is probably the normal 'quaking' the baby quaker parrots do. When we got Bonnie she didn't eat or drink the first day, then she was fine. Just give your baby time to adjust without forcing her to interact if she doesn't wish to. Hope to hear more from you!

Thank you for the advice. I want to be the best parrot parent that I can! I want to handle her but know it takes time I’m not in Australia, does coo-eee mean something? I chose it, Kui, for the kakua nut from Hawaii! Later in the day she fell off a perch and became quite vocal ( hee hee!)!! Can’t wait to see what type of personality she has!

Hi Pamela and kui ..cute name for her..my little guy buddy loves to sit and a lot of times puffs up..it's a sign that he's content and resting comfortable, but they do it when they're cold too. Earned him the nick name Puff daddy. They're so cute as youngsters with the quaking..buddy still does it sometimes even tho he's 15 months..part of his boogie act he does when mooching a treat ! Congrats on your new lil girl !plenty of good folks here to help you out with anything..when ya get some time, search back on some of our threads to backround info. Cheers!

Hi again, Pamela and Kui, In Australia if we are in the bush it's kind of an Aussie thing to yell out "coo-eee!" (same as "hello", basically). Here on the QP forum we call parrot parents "parronts". Dinucci is correct, being fluffed up is not necessarily bad, just a sign she's comfortable. You might also notice that, after she gets a bit older and gets her proper balance, she might stand on one foot and tuck the other one up in her belly feathers. Bonnie used to fall off her perch regularly when she was a baby. At first we were worried she'd get hurt, but she never did and then we just used to laugh our heads off whenever she did it. You will soon find out that these adorable little creatures (haha, I was about to say "monsters" :0) have HUGE personalities! Better be prepared!

Bitetybird, glad to know I am now a parrot 😀!! She is getting better, a little more active and getting around more in her cage. thank you for the info, I did worry about her falling off her perch. Got to remember she’s just a baby and still learning!

Congratulations on your new little one and you are in for quite a ride... lol... Many things will make you worry and many things will make you laugh. Any questions you have... do not hesitate to ask... we are here to help. Has she started screaming when you leave the room yet?? well... she will... and the only way I have found to quiet my Quaker up when I leave... is to whistle back to let him know I am okay. They are flock birds and always call out to their flock to make sure all is well.
Have fun with your baby.
