Hello. My rescue Quaker Parrot, Charlie, has passed away. He had PVFD, and I knew he had the disease when I rescued him. I had him for 9 years and the previous owner had him for five. I was told that his parents should never have been bred. What I want to know if, how soon must I wait to get another bird. I am discarding the cage and toys and everything in it. I will wash his cover several times and perhaps reuse it. His dander is probably all over the room he was in, and so that is a concern for me. He was the joy of my life and I am just so sad to have lost him and his sweet disposition. If someone can give me some tips on what to do, if I do get another bird, to make sure the new bird does not get sick. I cannot get attached and go through this again! Thank you.

Sorry for your loss. You gave Charlie a good, happy life for all the years you had together. Certainly, you will need to do a thorough cleaning of your home, especially the areas where Charlie spent any time. I don't have any specific suggestions on how to go about it; maybe someone else on the Forum will. Possibly, your veterinarian would have some recommendations for you too.

Hi - sorry to hear about losing your Charlie... First vacuum your home, then wipe down surfaces with white vinegar and steam clean floors and walls from the top down (if you have a steam cleaner). Then wash curtains & furnishings on a high hot water setting and you should be right. Don't let this put you off getting another bird. It sounds like you are a very responsible bird owner/slave.

It is always so sad when you loose a pet... my sincere condolences. I am curious as to what PVFD stands for? Is this the polyoma virus? My quaker has this but so far he is handling everything quite well. I have been told there is a chance that he will be able to fight it off for a long time... and I truly am hoping so. Oscar is 9 years old now. What age was your Quaker when you realized he had it??
Thank you for the information.
