Hello everyone,
I have been mom to Niki for over 19 years. He is doing well. We've had ups and downs, but he has a good vet who managed to bring him back from the brink a couple of times as he was dealing with some kidney issues and bacterial infections (If you are in the Toledo, Ohio area, I highly recommend Dr. Susan Orosz).
Living with an older birds has its challenges. He has some arthritis and can't preen his back or tail area. That is now one of my jobs. It's interesting that he never used to like me preening his back when he didn't have arthritis, but now it is his favorite thing. I'm also always looking for new recipes. He isn't as active and sleeps a lot so food is his favorite pastime.
I look forward to discussing our Q's with all of you!
Chris

Hi Chris, welcome! This is definitely the place for QP discussions. I'm sure you'll find lots of help from some great people and read some interesting stuff - I know I have. . It's lovely that you are so caring for your 'older' bird & I'm sure he appreciates it.

Hi Chris. I have a 21 year old, Peppy, though he's only been with me for a few months. I'll look forward to your insights about caring for an older quaker.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
Easttext: The biggest thing I'm finding with an older quaker right now is that they can get yeast and bacterial infections easily. Niki goes along really great and then all of a sudden he gets one. I noticed yesterday he is losing some feathers around his ear due to scratching. He has had this before and the vet said his ear was rampant with yeast. Yuck. I don't know why he gets them but he is prone to them. He also has had bacterial infections in his droppings, so just be on the lookout for anything that looks strange.
