I went to see some friends of mine in northeast Georgia,(beautiful part of the country.) I digress, when I came back Trump was thrilled to see me as was I. I got home yesterday and was really tired as I take Xanax before I get on a plane. Planes and I aren't friends at all. I woke up this morning and I noticed one of her toenails was just about gone. It had a tiny bit of dried blood and a little bit on her perch which was obviously days old. I asked my dad if he heard her scream or anything, he said he heard nothing. I don't think he would lie or do anything to her. I have been around birds enough to know that she had to make noise about that kind of injury. He works 12 hours a day so it could have happened while he was at work... I just don't understand how that could happen, and then there's not much blood found. I'm sorry for ranting a bit. I just feel awful that she got hurt and I don't know how... Which means I can't prevent it from happening again.... Had a great time, but I'm glad to be home!! Hope you all are doing well...

I'm sad to hear that! Lucky she was still happy to see you! I'm sure she will be OK but it is a worry.

Sorry to hear Ricky..I wonder if she got it caught on a toy or chain..buddy has done this a couple times..getting caught..but didn't lose a nail. A pet store I went to had a sun conure that climbed a wiffle like ball rope toy,so I got one for buddy..he tried, but got his claws caught and hasn't played with it since...soon I will open my online site for bird toys new and seldom used. As for her injury, what can you do to keep her from chewing on it and get it to heal right? I know there's something that is used for dogs that tastes horrible and keeps them from licking..is there anything like that for birds?

She really isn't messing with that toe much. She seems normal in her walking and climbing. I would describe her as acting like if I had clipped her toenails. I think this is more instincts than anything because she shows no signs of being in pain or discomfort. I don't know if she will have a normal toenail again, but I'm glad she's doing as well as she is...

Oh dear...sorry, I'm late to this thread. I hope she's doing OK. I guess you'll never really know what happened. What a mystery...

She is doing great, she is talking more and more cuddly since I've been back. I get woken up every morning by "come here" and "whatcha'doin." I think I've narrowed it down to either the whiffle ball toy or getting it caught on the cage... it had spaces that could have caught her toe. I have remedied that just in case and that toy is gone too...😊😊😊

Sorry to hear about the toe nail. The important thing is that it has stopped bleeding and that is great! I am not sure if you know but these little birds do not have much blood in their bodies so they can bleed out very quickly. If you are around and notice blood on their feet be sure to just put some flour or cornstarch on the injury to stop it from bleeding. Do not use those sticks that humans use for when they have a little cut... sorry but I forget what they are called... that is what old age does to you. lol
I am glad that all is well... and please do not let this interfere with your future travel plans... All will be well. And good for you for removing the things that you feel might have been the cause.

Yes, I am very lucky she didn't bleed out. It's amazing how quickly these little birds can endear themselves to us. I wonder if her toenail will ever be normal. It doesn't matter to me, I just have an inquiring mind. I won't be traveling for a while but not because of her. I just HATE airplanes!!! Lol

My Verdito's 1st 2 cages had places where he could, & on accession did, get a toe stuck. Finally I found a cage that didn't. It's a large one for a QP but he really likes it a lot. He spends more time in this cage than the previous 2. It has a skirt around the bottom to catch seeds, etc. & is on wheels, so it's not portable. He has another large one for travel. Glad your little baby didn't bleed out & is doing well. They are such dear little creatures. We took Verdito camping with us once with his travel cage. He seemed to really enjoy being out in the woods. He'd sit on top of his cage & chirp happily. We took him into our tent with his cage at night & still covered it. That was a fun adventure for all of us.

Yes... they sure do love the outdoors. I am presuming that Verdito has been clipped so he doesn't fly away. Just remember to keep a very close eye on him as although they cannot fly for great distances... they can still fly and you would no want him to land in many places. I take my Quaker outside as much as I can and he just loves going in the garden and in the grass. He is afraid of trees but I try to coach him to sit on a limb once in a while... but only on a very short tree... lol

We've taken Verdito apple picking. He enjoys eating the apples with us & sitting on a branch to munch on leaves. Another one of his fav excursions is going with us for ice cream at the local dairy farm. He gets his own spoon of whipped cream & nuts. People there always are enamored with him. This is actually the first year I haven't clipped his wings. He doesn't seem to have any interest in going too far from me. Even when he heads toward the front of the house, he tends to look back at me to see if I'm following. lol He never even flies in the house any more because he's so use to us picking him up & walking with him.
