Welcome to you and Sora! Talk to Sora a lot-- the more you talk to a parrot, the more likely he is to say some words back to you.

Welcome to the Forum! I'm in Australia and have a blue quaker parrot called Bonnie. Cnyguy is right, talk a lot to Sora and he will imitate your words after a while. Our Bonnie said "Hello" after we'd had her for about 2 weeks (so she would have been 10 weeks old). It takes a bit of time but it's worth it. Hope you enjoy the Forum.

Hello mbkaya! Welcome ! Not to worry. .sora will pickup the talking. I was confused a bit because buddy,my little guy, talked at 5 or 6 months. Said "hey buddy, what ya doin?"..but that's all he said for the next 3 months no matter how much I worked with him. I read that most quakers talk a lot, some a little, and few never talk. So I figured he fell in between. Now though, and 14 months, he talks a lot and is currently in a upward learning curve..talks a lot ..perhaps his previous keeper didn't work with sora. Since he mimics your slippers, that's a good sign he's listening..buddy does this as well..gym shoes squeaking on the tile floor. When he's doing that,he's heightened and in a good mood..a good time to work with sora. Best of luck to you !

Hello and welcome to you both. I find if I want my quaker (Oscar) to learn new words... I just pick the word and repeat it to him at various times during the day. First thing in the morning is the best as they are at full attention. While you walk, perhaps repeat over and over "good morning sora" and soon enough he will say it back to you.
Quakers practice talking before they actually say it out loud as they really want to get it right. Patience is the virtue.
You mentioned he is a little aggressive and yes they certainly can be. They protect what is theirs and they will forever. I have had Oscar for 7 years and to this day... he will try and get my hand while I am giving him fresh food. My husband is not even allowed near the cage or Oscar will attack him. Also he is not allowed near me... lol lol.

ı could not get online that much over the weekend and I am reaaly happy to see your welcomes. Thank you all (L)! Biteybird! So jealous of you. We are now together for 8 weeks, all he mimics is the slippers and some mouth sounds I make to distract him. Yesterday night he was chatty for 1-1,5 hours. we made mouth sounds across room It was so fun! Dinucci You are giving me hopes thank you. It is OK if he will not talk or he will talk in his cage. I read here that some talk in cage not with parents. But I would be delightful if he talks. I got him from pet shop. So I think, I am the first one training with him. The slippers means "where are you going?" or "are you going outside of the room?" or even "take me with you"! lol. Julianna Thanks for your kind advice. Yea I picked some words with occasions. like good night, good morning, welcome, bye bye and bon apetit, is it yummy, yeah it is yummy (all of them are in Turkish btw) and some random words like darling, honey, some other sweet words, names of the fruits etc. and we will see! I cannot wait tho.

Hi again, mbkaya, all quakers are different in how long (or if at all) they will take to talk. Don't despair! You are on the right track. Just take your time and don't be hard on yourself and Sora. Bonnie talks most when she thinks we are not listening...like if we are in another room and being quiet, she starts chattering and practising her words and whistles. Also, she talks most when she's very happy and content and half asleep!

Mbkaya. .sora's making progress! Try some whistles too. I mimic the birds outside..im pretty good at it. Buddy looks at me all confused too ! I use different tones of voice a lot that mean different moods in a way. Buddy picks up his attention to my girlfriends high voice that she does to say things like ,good boy! Good morning ect. As for me,he picks up on my voice in different moods haha. When I'm working on something in the kitchen and things aren't going well,he will see im frustrated with something and say," come on will ya?what's ya doing?" Or "Whats a Matta withca, whudda ya nuts? Haha so they pickup on your mood and will say something appropriate. They can learn to swear easily, even in Turkish !! Hahah So be careful! We don't swear around him cause I know he'd use it on me especially when I clean his cage ! Cheers !

Hello again! I hold my hopes up thanks to you! We are giving and taking mouth noises much more now since I copy his noises and laugh with enthusiasm now and say the word after it. We are progressing yey! Actually biteybird, I am afraid he will be cage talker but maybe he will not who knows? Dinucci ahahah I am sure his confused look is very very funny I read here I think, they pick up words said more enthusiastically, I dont know the exact word but like you swear in a spur of moment with anger, the words said without thought, I think. It will not be good to get sweared at. I dont usually swear but my hub does I constantly warn him "dont swear with the kid" I think sora will get this line instead of swearing. lol. Buddy is so cute They read your moods and respond to it and you pretty much communicate with them. I read that they comfort owners when they are sad etc. I think this is amazing. Julianna sorry for the late response bout aggressiveness, I remembered it now. Sora was being aggressive to the neighbors across the street (with even curtains) since they were on the balcony to get some fresh air. Sometimes I cannot even see them and need to stand up get close to the window, I dont know how he even manages to see them so clearly, pick them as enemies and shouting at the highest of his lungs. As for the cage, we are ok I think, if I dont try to change anything, and for my husband too. hahha you will not be able to get cuddles sorry for your loss. But if he is in his cage, he would aggressively do not want to be picked up, no hands in the cage and if I insist too much he will bite And if he wants something like delicious cookie on my hand, it definitely is his. no other options Thanks to him I managed to lose weight, 2 kg, by just eating fruits. lol. cheers to you all with love...
