How far has anyone got with toilet training? I spent an afternoon with Pidge and he now knows and responds to "Poo". Has anyone got their bird to go to a designated area?

Hey pidgesmom! Yeah its working for us. Our method? We have a roll cart, similar to a bus cart on a restaurant. On top of that sits his t perch. We roll this cart to whatever room we are in so he has his designated "poop area" very nearby us since he hangs with us a lot..I think julianna has had success this way as well..while watching a movie, game whatever in the family room, buddy climbs all over us. At 15 minute intervals, we send him to his perch" go to perch buddy",command. He may sit there a few or immediately poops. I have walnut pieces nearby, and give him one and praise him with "good boy! ". So now 50 percent of the time,he goes there on his own. It's funny because when he does it,it's immediately followed by little head bobs in anticipation of a treat! Takes time and patience, but it's fun training him to do so. He did it last night with a crowd of family here for dinner, inspite of so many distractions. Another thing is you can tye little toys to his t stand to keep his interest while "sitting on the pot". But when he goes..gotta have those treats ready. One side note..having this cart t stand has cut down the frequency of not only spot cleaning, but cleaning his cages as well. The papers on the cart and t stand are quick to clean every day. Hope this helps ya out a lil. Cheers!

Ohh by the way, I've seen these t stands for sale at various places. Most have a food dish attached to the side. I don't think this is a good idea because the bowl with food would encourage him to eat and play there, and may cause confusion as to its purpose. I made mine out of 2x6 with 5/8th dowel rods screwed in and counter sunk. Untreated pine ..easy to wash off. Best of luck!

Dinucci is right, Julianna has had success with this. There are a few threads she has contributed to, dealing with this...use the search field at the top right, search "poop".

Next morning, I said Poo! to Pidge before I got him out of the cage and he did! unfortunately it is downhill since then. He is over that game! it depends on me recognising when he wants to go. i'd like to teach him to go on a bit of paper. Why do i have so few capitals? Pidge has run off with my shift keys.

Funny pidgesmom! That's what buddy does 1st thing..I wait..before I take him out. We've been working on this for a while now and it takes quite a bit of patience. I just use the 15 minute interval thing to send him to perch, but sometimes he gets so excited chewing my jeans or socks that he forgets, and when I shrug him off my legs,he goes to the floor and poops there...as if to say " there that will teach you "! We'll see how far he goes with this but I don't ever see him being as good as a dog would be..

You are right dinucci... accidents will happen especially if we are not paying attention. When Oscar gets overly excited he will turn around over and over on my shoulder... sometimes I forget that this is also the sign.. for I gotta poop... lol
Oscar basically never poops on people but always on Kleenex or newspaper. Sometimes directly on the floor however... that would be my fault.
It really is wonderful having him trained... so much cleaner...and easy on my clothes.
I won't repeat the process of how I trained him as it is already posted and like Biteybird mentioned... just search for poop. If you have any other questions... I would be happy to answer them for you.

I found the perfect trolley. An old wooden one for $10 but it sold before I could get it. I usually put towel or paper around the edge of the nearest table. When he shows the signs I say 'quick..quick' until I put him on the table and then "Poo!". Lots of excitement when he gets it right. On one occasion he went to the table himself but I think that was an accident.

Give him praise and a treat for sure..it's as if they want to be good and learn which makes training fun ya know what I mean? They can be quick to learn the reward part of the program. I thought tho..that once buddy learned something he would just automatically do it. I trained him to fly to me,and from one t stand to the other. Now he shows no interest in this ,treats or no treats. I've stopped for a few days here and there for different reasons, but he won't do it anymore. As long as he does the poop perch,I'm happy! Hard to forget for him when he has to go every 15 mins !

lol dinucci.... yup... about every 15 minutes for sure. I never stop the praise for when he poops somewhere that is not on me or the floor. The sound of it hitting the newspaper ... and I call out... "good poop" "good boy"... and of course I must sound all excited... ewwwww... but funny too.

All I can say is he knows what I want but whether he remembers is another thing. 3 times he's raced to the table to do it. Hooray!

Julianna. .I'm gonna have to remember about the walk around thing just before..I seem to recall that indicator now that ya mention it! For all of you reading out there, but not talking...see what we learn here?? Haha
