My girlfriend had a cockatiel that passed away over a year ago at 22yrs old. He was a picky guy that wouldn't take any food other than his all seed diet. No fresh stuff at all no matter how hard I tried. He was in failing health,so I took care of him here for his last few months.
Anyways,I was determined once we got buddy this past May,that he was going to get the biggest variety possible right from the start. He's on Zupreem pellets except for the banana shapes ! He tosses them out of his bowl to the bottom of the cage. When I check his bowl to refill, theres never one in there! So I'm figuring they are made of bananna. It's funny because sometimes he's sitting on his t stand and I'll offer him one of the bananna shapes. He takes it,whips it out of his beak to the floor and immediately turns to nip my finger..just too hard not to tease him every once in a while!
His likes: minced red chard, cilantro, zucchini, spinach, cabbage of all kinds ,Brussel sprouts, mung bean sprouts, alfalfa sprouts, fresh basil, oregano, thyme, dill, parsley, red leaf lettuce, arugula.Steamed artichoke hearts especially.
Fruits : minced apple, and apricots only..sometimes nectarines. Hates pineapple, grapes, mango, orange, bananas ect., what kind of latin is he? which is hard to figure knowing he has a sweet beak for other things. .absolutely hates tomatoes! What kind of italian is he? When I make pizzas,he does eat the top soft part of the crust with some sauce..
Whole grains: loves lentils and wheat berries I soak in the fridge. Wild rice, oats, flax seed, basic no sugar cereals we eat here like special k and Kashi..
Won't drink juice of any kind warm or cold.
Others: spinach pasta he loves, hard boiled eggs, diced chicken, fish, but his number 1 favorite of all time is baked salmon. He will go thru the wall for it. I think he was attracted to the color at first, but after mooching a piece from me when he was little,it would be the first thing he'd eat in his daily assortment.
It's been a lot of fun " cooking" for him and when the first light is about to hit in the morning, I hear "yummies yum yum yum " from under his cage blankets as I chop up his daily forage !
